Re: CIO

  • Can anyone tell me how their experience with CIO went? In my experience CIO didn't work until my LO was around 1yo.

When you started? We tried it for the first time around 10 months but it didn't go over well. We tried it again around 13 mths.

What was your method? First time, we just laid him down and would check on him every few minutes

Times you checked on them? At 10 mths 2 min, 4 min, 6 min, and then I just felt like I was being cruel so I stopped. At 13 mths, he fell asleep after 4 min.

How long it took? Now, its about 4 min, but he is really whining and not crying.

How long is too long? Personally I think your LO is a bit young for CIO, but that is only my opinion. You know what will work best for you. For me, I wouldn't let me LO cry more than 15 min.

    Good luck!

We started last week (5.5 months old). We are on night 6. The first night she cried/fussed for 16 minutes. The second night she cried/fussed for 13 minutes and since then she has not cried, she just rolls around in there for about 10 minutes and then goes to sleep.

We checked on her the first few nights at 3, 5, and 8 minute intervals. Same the second night, but then we were going to increase the intervals to 5, 8, 10., we just haven't needed to.

My husband and I made a deal that if the crying went on for 60 minutes, we would stop and try again in a few weeks. She never even got close.

I think the thing to remember is that your LO has to have ways to soothe themselves (roll to a comfy position, grab a lovey, grab a paci etc.), and if they aren't old enough for that yet, it's probably too soon to try any sleep training.

  • Haven't attempted with DS2 yet because he's too young, imo.

With DS1, we did it at 6 months old in order to drop the MOTN feeding, as recommended by our pediatrician.  It took 3 nights.  He cried for 10 minutes the first night, 5 minutes the next and 1 or 2 minutes the 3rd night.  We never went in or did anything.  He STTN with no issues after that.

This is exactly what we plan on doing. DS has been great at putting himself to sleep (except the last few days have been horrible). We are waiting until he's consistently rolling both ways and can put his paci back in pretty much on his own. Right now he can find the paci and sometimes get it pushed back in but he's lucky to do that.

  • When you started?  We had to transition to her crib when she was 16 weeks because I no longer felt safe with her in the RnP.
What was your method? Progressive waiting
Times you checked on them? 3, 5, and 10 minutes
How long it took? The first night was terrble.  Every night since then has been a breeze.
How long is too long?  Don't have an answer for ya on this one.

  • Started a week or so ago, DD is 5 and a half months.

Used Ferber method and followed the check times in the book almost exactly. First night, went in and reassured her (and myself) after 3 min, then 5, then 7, then 10. Increased next night time by 2 mins and so on.

It started working for us that night. DD was previously waking every 1 or 2 hours needing to be rocked back to sleep. The first night she only woke once.

The longest she has cried is about 25 minutes, and that was for a nap. It has worked really well for us. Good luck if you decide to do it!

  • When you started?  With DD at 6 months
What was your method?  We tried every method you could think of.
Times you checked on them? We tried a whole bunch of different intervals.
How long it took? It never worked for us. It still does not.
How long is too long? For us trying at 5 minute intervals for an hour was enough.

CIO doesn't work for every baby.

edit: DD has to have someone with her to put her to sleep. She can self soothe in the middle of the night fairly well, but she has never been able to put herself to sleep all by herself. It is what it is.

  • When you started?  LO was 14 weeks.

What was your method?   Sleep Sense Training Program

Times you checked on them? 10 mins of crying

How long it took?  The first night 55 mins. Every night after less than 10 mins. After two weeks there was no crying at all. Naps are usually good but not 100%

How long is too long?  We planned to stick with it for three nights and if it didn`t work then move on to something else.  For the first night we planned that after two hours we would stop, feed and start again.  Luckily we never made it to that point.

Only you can determine what`s right for your LO.  I know people will think I started my LO early but I was a couple days away from a full nervous breakdown because of LO`s crappy sleeping and LO was so miserable from never getting enough sleep despite all my efforts. So this was the right thing for us.
