Daycare Question

So, DH called me this morning after he dropped Luci off and told me that DC told him that they HAVE to feed Luci breakfast and lunch now that she is 9 months old.  Her bottle doesn't count, they have to at least try to give her solids at breakfast and lunch time.  This doesn't really bother me, except for the fact that I have to provide the solids, which also doesn't really bother me.

I was just wondering if this was really a thing.  They said it is part of the state regulations for DCs but I have never heard of it before and I know quite a bit about DC regs due to my job.  Also, they are several weeks late.  I know that they are having to do a lot of things to keep their licensure going because of the fire, but this just kind of came out of left field....

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else has had this experience!

Re: Daycare Question

  • My daycare never mentioned a regulation at 9 months of having to feed them solids, but I guess it was never really an issue because by that point all of my kids were eating solids at b-fast and lunch...  So, I'm no help.  Sorry!

  • I have never heard of that.  We are in NJ.  DD did not even eat solids until I forced the issue when she was a year old, so I'm glad they never tried to do it.  It seems crazy for the state to mandate what my kid eats.  I mean, I can understand if the state says that they have to make it available, but if they are requiring you to bring it, then I don't get it.

The state says your kid has to eat solids?

That is what the DC told DH.  We already send solids for one meal a day and do one at home.  She is interested in solids, but would prefer a bottle most of the time.  I just think it is weird that the state is mandating that because DD goes to DC she HAS to have solids for breakfast and lunch....  Oh well, just thought it was interesting....

  • I'm really surprised daycare is mandating this, especially when most pediatricians will tell you that food before 1 is just for fun and that you really shouldn't start cutting back on bottles to give more finger food till they're 11 or so months.

  • I'm also in NJ, and that's not a rule at our daycare.

  • Not a regulation in MN, in fact we followed parents wishes with regards to food until they move to the toddler room. In the toddler room the children are offered breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack if they are at school when those meals are served.

This chart was published by a MN USDA CACFP program, but it's based on federal guidelines.

    https://www.providerschoice.com/pdfs/meal%20pattern%20for%20infants.pdf

    ETA: here's the USDA chart:

    https://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/care/ProgramBasics/Meals/Infant_Meals.pdf

Now. If your daycare (center? home?) doesn't participate in the food program, then I'm not sure where they're getting the rule from! But USDA does publish the guidelines above, so they could be following that still.

Thanks!  I had never seen those before!  It is a DC center, and they do participate in the food program which is why I am a bit confused as to why I have to provide the food.  I don't mind doing it, because then I can choose what she eats, but I just thought it was weird to suddenly tell us about it...

If they're on the federal food program, they are required to serve (she doens't have to eat it) meals starting at 9m.  BUT they should be providing the food if they're on the program. So I call BS on you having to bring food that they have to serve.

This is what I was thinking too.
