Hubby @ 1st Appt?

I FINALLY have my first doctor's appointment this morning (I scheduled it 5 weeks ago!).  Do you think it's worth it for my husband to come to this one? Or should he wait for later appointments.  I just don't want him to be bored and uncomfortable unnecessarily... think he'll miss anything major if he doesn't come?

Re: Hubby @ 1st Appt?

  • Call your Dr's office and ask if they want him there. Mine requested DH be there for the first appt. They take a medical history from both parents. And you shouldn't worry that he might be bored! He should be excited about the whole process!

  • i think it depends on the doctor. It was nice to have DH there but it was more for moral support for me. The doctor didn't ask him any questions and asked him to leave the room when he was doing the cervix check on me.

  • Mine was there. We also waited about 5 weeks for our first appointment, so I knew there would be an ultrasound. It was great to be there for the first appointment together!

  • Did you already have your prenatal appt with a nurse where they ask medical history and do a blood draw?  If not, then yes, he should come.

If it's just your first OB appt, there's really no need for him to be there.  You pee in a cup, they do weight, BP, then you'll have an internal exam/pap, and they may or may not try the doppler this early.  Other than that, it's a quick appt.

  • I think it totally depends on your doctor and what is planned for your appointment. My OB requested my DH to be at my 8 wk intense medical questionnaire and first ultrasound. We had the 2nd ultrasound at the 12 wk so he wanted to be there for that appt as well to see the baby and hear the heartbeat again.
  • They might do an ultrasound so he'll probably enjoy being there.

  • Mine was there, which was probably a good thing because they asked him about his family's medical history.
  • DH came to every appointment with DD, and he's come to both of our appointments so far in this pregnancy.  We had u/s with the first couple appointments, which he definitely wants to see, and we get to hear the heartbeat using the Doppler all the other appointments.  He's also good at remembering to ask questions that I forget.

  • At my first appt they did an ultrasound - if they are going to do that for you - don't let your DH miss that experience!

  • At my first appointment, they did a dating ultrasound, so I'm glad DH was there for that.  Also he got to meet the midwife and answer questions about his family's medical history I wouldn't have known.

  • I've had H at every apt...even ones I didn't think it was worth it.  My last apt he almost didn't go -- and it ended up being the first time we heard baby's heartbeat -- THANK GOD he was there...I can't imagine him missing that!!!

I've also always left it up to H -- I schedule when I know he can make it -- he WANTS to be there when he goes...so it's not like I'm dragging him...

Thanks for the advice ladies. I called my dr and asked their advice. No ultrasound this appt, just medical history and bloodwork... He stayed home for this one.

  • Leave it up to your DH. I think it's unnecessary to have H there, it is boring, But if he wants to be there he should! My H doesn't come to anything but 20 week ultrasound. I don't see the need. Plus now he watches DS when he can get out of work for a couple hours so I enjoy kid free time alone at the Dr!!

  • My husband has been to every appointment ((thankfully his job allows him to work from home on those days)) since we had a MC with our first pregnancy he is very involved with appointments and scheduling work accordingly.

CALL your DOCTOR!  I wanted to make sure my SO wouldn't miss out on anything, so I called to find out what my appt would consist of... Sure enough she said that we would hear the heart beat on the doppler :)  (we have already seen our little mini eggo at 6weeks)  Because of all the ladies posting about how their doctors weren't able to find the HB with the doppler, I knew that there would be a chance we would get to see the baby again. He wanted to be there to hear/see the baby either way. Sure enough, my dr couldn't find the HB and immediately  took us over to get an u/s! :)  :)  :)    He was so happy he was there.

  • I really liked having DH there for the first appointment. It was helpful for him to be able to chime in and remember information!

  • DH didn't go to either first appointments bc they were just general overview of pregnancy appts...nothing really exciting. He was definitely there for the ultrasounds last time. He will hopefully be at this first one but work stuff has come up that may not let him go so I'm very sad about that bc it's such an exciting appt to hear the HB for the first time and seeing your baby for the first time.

  • How exciting your first appt!!! I think he should come because if you want to get the panoramic testing done - they'll take your blood, and swab his cheek for DNA (I see your over 10 weeks, so you are far enough along to get it!) I don't see many talk about that test on here, but I have to rave about it! You get results for chromosomal defects in 3 weeks plus you find out the gender! And you don't have to do anything high risk, just give blood.. and a lot of insurances cover the whole thing or most of it! Anyway- hope your appt goes well, and that you AND hubby enjoy it! I was glad my guy was with me, we had our first ultrasound that day, and he provided comic relief, plus he had some good questions of his own to ask the nurse practioner.
  • DH came to every single appointment with #1, most of the appointments with #2, and so far out of the three I have had (initial visit to confirm pregnancy, U/S, and 1st OB/pap) he only came to the U/S. Honestly, most of the appointments are boring to me (just urine, weight check, BP check, and HB) that i wish I could skip them too, haha. He will come to the U/S and probably one or two of the visits, but will likely skip the rest. But, this is also baby #3 and so we feel pretty comfortable with the process at this point.

Will baby #3 be another girl?
