Two Under 2

sit and stand vs. umbrella stroller

I am trying to decide between two types of strollers: a sit and stand (looking at the Joovy Caboose Ultralight or Caboose too) or an umbrella (like the Maclaren triumph).  My kids are 18 months apart (25 months old and 7 months old) and don't need to put the car seat in it.  Does anybody have any experience with either that could tell me which you think would be better?  If you have the strollers I mentioned, would you recommend them? My toddler usually does pretty well in a stroller but lately has been trying to get out although he is good about getting back in later.

Thanks!

Re: sit and stand vs. umbrella stroller

  • I actually have both an umbrella and a sit and stand.  I use the umbrella for quick trips to the mall, a walk to the park, or running into a store that doesn't have or require a cart.  DD1 prefers to be independent and walk with us and the sit and stand is bulkier so I don't carry it with me.  I use the sit and stand for longer activities (the zoo, all day at the mall, long walks).  DD1 will walk for a while and then ride for a while.

I have the following strollers - I love the umbrella stroller and the sit and stand is OK, but I don't use it enough to justify spending more on a stroller.  I bought both with a 20% off coupon at BRU.

  • We have a 24 month old and a 3 month old and use the Joovy Caboose Ultralight and Caboose Too Seat. I really love the stroller. My biggest complaint is the limited space for the toddler when using the infant carseat. If you haven't already, search Baby Gizmo for their reviews of the stroller they have one with the Too Seat attached.
  • I have the joovy caboose ultralight and have been using it almost every day for the last year or so. It is a great lightweight, easy to fold stroller. They have pretty good resale value too.
  • DD is almost 3 and she still rides in the stroller a lot.  I would not be able to take the kids certain places (like the zoo or Sesame Place) without having the ability for both to ride in the stroller.  I would go with a sit and stand.  Even if your toddler doesn't always want to ride, it gives you more space for a diaper bag and stuff than an umbrella stroller does.

Honestly, I wouldn't get either of these. I would get a real double stroller but that's just me.  I need to be able to contain both kids.

We have the Sit N Stand that also has a 2nd seat that is removable to become the sit n stand. My DD is almost 3 and she still rides in the stroller in a seat. We haven't even made it so she can stand yet. I love our Sit N Stand. And we had a City Mini Double before this.

This is the one we got.

  • I guess I should have mentioned I already have a double stroller that I use for long walks but is pretty heavy and bulky. It's a Phil and Teds Explorer with the second seat. I was looking for something I could keep in the car that was light and wouldn't take up too much space. Does that change your opinion on which to get?

My boys are 19 months apart and I was initially looking at Maclarens for when the LO was a little older but ended up getting a Valco Snap Dual because it weighed less and had a bigger basket. I use that more around the neighborhood right now, although I am planning on using it for outings later on.

I was gifted the Safety 1st Stand onBoard. Not a popular choice, but it's kinda like a snap in go with an extra seat, as far as size. I like the fact it opens in one step and folds down to the size of a snap n go only thicker, so it's good for trunk space. It's no frills and has a basket only slightly larger than an umbrella.

If it was just something I was using to keep in the trunk I'd do the Safety 1st for shopping and short trips. If you are doing things like the zoo I'd do a bigger Sit N Stand like PPs mentioned or do a stroller like the Snap so you have a large basket. It really depends on your usage.
