Can we discuss a breech delivery

I'm being induced next Friday (37 weeks) and while baby A is head down and very low baby B is transverse/a tiny bit head down. My dr is open to trying a vaginal birth and possible breech delivery of baby B. I have done little research as I feel ignorance is bliss in my world but I want to be somewhat prepared. If you've had a breech birth can you tell me about it and if you think it's a good option?  I'd love to hear what you have to say.

Re: Can we discuss a breech delivery

  • My baby B was born breech after baby A came out head first. Before delivery they were positioned like yours arebut my baby b didn't turn.
Baby A was a fast easy delivery. Baby B was born 4 hrs later bc she wasn't moving down. Finally the doctor broke her water and basically pulled her out feet first bc her heart rate was dropping with the contractions. It didn't go as smoothly, I tore a good bitbut in the end the outcome was fine and I was able to avoid a C section, which was great!
My second twin was only 4lb9oz though delivered at 34 wk, so I'm sure that made it easier. The only concern I would have is that if A comes out and they start having issues with B, you could end up with both a vaginal and C section delivery.

  • No experience here. Ive had my other 2 singletons vaginally and if my situation is like yours, my OB says he thinks Im a good candidate for a breech extraction as well. Only time will tell for me. Im looking forward to your responses. Good luck to you and sending vibes for a smooth delivery, no matter what ends up being the situation.

  • What you've described is pretty much what my team had said they'd be comfortable with as well. They've told me that so long as Baby A is head down, they do a vaginal birth almost every time, regardless of Baby B's position. Unfortunately I'm scheduled for a c-section because both of mine are lying transverse across the birth canal.

  • My baby a was head down and baby b was breech when I was induced at 32 weeks 3 days for preeclampsia. Everything went smooth and baby a was born vaginally. I was prepared to have baby b via a breech extraction but as soon as sister was out he ended up flipping. It was great to know I wouldn't need a breech extraction after all. We waited for awhile for him to move his arm away from his face. When he finally did, the doctor broke his water. His water basically exploded all over the doctors and my husband. The force caused a cord prolapse and I had an emergency c section minutes later. I was one of the lucky ones who gave birth to baby a vaginally and had a c section for baby b. If I had to choose again I would still try to do the vaginal birth but that's just me. Good luck!
  • I was induced at 36 wks. Baby A was born vaginally, and Baby B remained breech. My OB was comfortable with breech extractions and literally pulled B out by his heel 1 minute after baby A was out. Totally smooth. Good luck!

So far my plan is the same as yours. I'm only 25 weeks and the thought of delivering twins vaginally or via csection has me a little scared! I have had two successful vaginal deliveries and my doc seems that is the best plan. I fully trust her, I just have to prepare mentally.

    Good luck!!!
  • I was induced at 38 weeks and B was and remained breech. My OB team is very comfortable with breech extractions and my B was extracted with very little issue. The biggest source of pain was their attempt at manual inversion after A was born, my stomach was sore! The doc had to reach in and break the water manually as she wasn't able to get his little ankles through the sac. And I wasn't expecting that I still needed to push him out as she guided him out. Anyhow, no issues and I would totally do it again under normal and healthy circumstances!

  • Just had my di di twin girls a week ago. I was in same boat, A was head down and super duper low, while B was trans and super duper high. We opted for a c sec. I was bummed since I had two very successful vag deliveries prior. But we were worried I would get the double whammy of vag and c sec. Plus, I added a tube tie to the order. While recovery from the section has been not so great, I'm happy I choose to have a c sec. Baby A had cord around neck and B went breech and was still up in ribs. I was scared to do vag and end up with an emergency situation. Which is exactly what would have happened if I had gone ahead with a vag delivery. It could have been really bad for us with the cord issue on A.
All in all, you really just have to trust instincts and your drs. Everyone's birth stories are going to be so unique. Too many variables.
Good luck! And yay, your almost to the end of the pregnancy!!

My baby B was breech and I am so glad I delivered vaginally instead of via csection. He needed a little help to breath right at first, but other than that has been perfectly healthy.  I took my boys home after 2 days.
