Multiples

Early Signs of Twins?

LMP started May 31, 2012 - - Ovulation was either June 16 or 17 - - Last Monday (June 24) I started having very mild cramping/twinges and wasn't going away.  So, I thought, "What the hey?  I'll take a pregnancy test" (on Wednesday, June 26) - - Faint Positive which got darker progressively over the last few days.  Still having cramps/twinges/mild "stabs" - - Yesterday would have been start of AF for this cycle... and my breasts are HARD and nipples are SUPER sensitive and hurt a bit. (and cramping is continuous!)

I am a fraternal twin & my grandma (mom's mom) had fraternal twins...

I am wondering if anything I'm experiencing is an early sign of twins (being as it is SO early on in pregnancy!)

Re: Early Signs of Twins?

  • There aren't any true signs of twins. Everything that could indicate twins can also indicate a healthy pregnancy.  Ask for an ultrasound.  I will say that I tested 5 days before AF was due, and the line was dark! I tested 2 days later and the line was as dark as the control. 2 days after that, so the day before my period was due, the test line was darker than the control. I was charting my temp and doing OPKs so I know my O date for certain.

  • A positive pregnancy test at 10dpo is normal. You do have a higher risk of having multiples since you seem to come from a line of hyper ovulation, but only an ultrasound will tell you for sure.

    Thank you!

  • Yaay congratulations on your BFP!! I think you'll find the only way to know if you're having twins is by ultrasound. Really, there aren't any early signs that would be different from singleton pregnancies. You definately have the "twin gene" though, so you never know until you peek! Good luck!

I had an ultrasound at 4 weeks and saw nothing, not even one gestational sac. I had another ultrasound at 5 weeks 6 days and saw two sacs, two yolk sacs, two fetal poles, and two heartbeats.

  • I didn't have any of the symptoms you listed. I also never threw up from morning sickness. Each person and each pregnancy is different.

  • I had no symptoms of twins before we saw them at my 6 weeks sonogram. My blood levels weren't excessive and my HPT was faint at 10 days past O. However, we knew it could happen since we used two embryos with a fresh IVF.

  • I had severe morning sickness unlike anything I had with my singleton sad well as evere fatigue. I kept saying I must be having a girl since everything felt so different early on... I ended up having 2 girls!

  • My symptoms were stronger with my singleton. My beta levels didn't show any signs of twins, and my HPT took a while to come back positive 14 dpo. I was more tired than last time, but that's likely due to the fact I have a 4 y.o. Diva.

I found out it was twins via u/s around 6 weeks.
