Sudden stuttering

I'm sure it's her language getting bigger than her little mouth can handle, but my 2 1/2 year dd is suddenly stuttering.  Like, a lot.  She never did up until last week.

"I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I want to get a toy, Mommy"

"You, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you, you... never mind" (said happily)

My son didn't do this.  Normal, right?

While my kids have not gone through this phase, I do know quite a few that have. Typically at this age it is considered normal. My nephew started stuttering at 3 and then stopped talking completely. He is 12 and still stutters, but it is not common.

Normal. Very important that you not point it out to her, interrupt her, or otherwise make her selfconscious and she will grow out of it soon.

  • At this age its normal. I would say don't worry just enjoy spending time with her.
  • My daughter went through this twice, severalmonths before turning two and then again a few months after turning two.  Both times it lasted a couple of weeks and then she had a big language burst.  A friend that is a speech therapist said it is normal before a big jump in language development because their minds move faster than their mouths

  • That happened to my oldest.  It scared the crap out of me because he just woke up one morning unable to get a word out without stuttering.  It lasted for about 6 months or so.  He has always had an advanced vocabulary and I think his brain was going faster than his mouth.  He is nearly 5 and seldom stutters now.  We looked at him the whole time he was trying to tell us something, didn't finish sentences for him and made sure that other caregivers did the same.  It will pass!
