TTC and work decision

I've been working as a temp in my position since January.  My position should have gone perm last month, but (long story short) I negotiated poorly on my own behalf, and I'll stay a temp until at least September.  I'm working for lousy pay and no benefits, although I love my job, and I get every other Monday off.

I've considered (and have been advised by others) going back to my boss, and breaching the subject, considering she went back on the terms that I was hired under.  Except one thing...

DH and I will be TTC this summer.  I assume with baby #2 I'll go back to work, but I can't say for absolute sure.  Should I push to become perm ASAP, or just stay a temp, show up pregnant, and let the chips fall where they may?

Re: TTC and work decision

  • Well you never know how long TTC will take. I'd evaluate this purely as a question about the job. Do you feel really invested in going permanent? Do you have a case to make about your value to the company that's significantly better than the case you made last month? Then go for it.

On the other hand, if your case for yourself would be the same as it was last month or with only minor changes, then your boss already heard it and decided to keep you at temp. You'll have to wait it out until you have a stronger case to make.

Growing your family is not relevant to your boss's decision, even though I totally understand it is everything to you and your H!

  • I'm a little confused. Why would you not ask to go permanent, just because you are ttc?
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

  • I would go back and talk to your boss. What's the worst thing that can happen? They say no to your position becoming permanent? If that happens, thank them for speaking with you about it and then you will have to wait till September. At least come that time, then your boss at least knows you have a continued interest in becoming full-time/permanent.

If I were you, I would also wait until you knew you would qualify for FMLA especially if it is a job that you like and enjoy. To qualify, I believe you need to be employed for 12 months in a permanent position before taking leave. This would greatly factor into my plans TTC. I, of course, don't know what your circumstances are.
