Hives

Does anyone have experience with hives while pregnant? I have them all under my inner arm and now on my elbow. I'm extremely itchy all over my upper body. I have left a message for my doctor but not sure what to do in the meantime. My cheat sheet says benedryl is okay but I'm already not a big medicine person, more so when pregnant, so feeling unsure. Any advice would be much appreciated. TIA!

Re: Hives

  • I've been getting hives like crazy too! Not fun! I've been using benedryl topical cream and cortisone if it's really bad. My dr ok'd those. It gets so bad on my legs at night I can barely stand it! Also, witch hazel helps a little, but the itch comes back too soon for me. Hope this helps!

Well, I'm happy to hear I'm not alone. MH is off to buy some Benedryl and I appreciate the suggestions! I have never heard this and didnt have it with my last pregnancy. It's been freaking me out! Again, thanks so much for the advice! Sorry you're dealing with this too.

  • Do you normally get seasonal allergies? Mine are usually pretty bad and now is no exception. My ob said it's another way of them manifesting. Totally normal. I hope you get some relief!

No, I don't have any allergies that I know of and haven't had hives since I was a kid. The doctor also just told me to change my soap, I use dr bronners, because it is probably too harsh on my skin right now. I guess dry skin could play a role in this? Ugh, I hope this gets better for you too!!

  • I can't remember who it was, but I read a blog by a woman who got intense hives during pregnancy and ended up having them through breastfeeding. He doctor believed it was her body's reaction to increases in a certain hormone or hormones. I wish I could remember more

  • I had hives early on. I think it was a head to toe reaction to amox I was on for strep throat. My OB told me to take Zyrtec because Benadryl actually didn't help.
