  • Black Chook sparkling Shiraz. Had it while in Australia, and it was lovely!

  • Shiraz tends to be a little on the sweet side. That's the first red wine I ever started to like. Now I love them all! My sister drank white and Zinfandel while she was pregnant w my nephew so I think that as long as it's in moderation you would be ok with those too! Good for you, I've been so stressed lately and I finally had a glass of red with dinner while on vacation. It was a little akward at first but definitely what I needed!

Why are you so concerned about sweet red wine "counting" as red wine? Not being snarky, I just don't get it.

    My thoughts too....
  • There's a brand I love called Vintage Ink that makes a Cabernet Sauvignon that is really good and not too..strong? For lack of better phrasing? I'm not huge red fan either and most often if I do red it has to be with a strong beef, but I can drink this one on its own.

Yes. It's a red wine. If you're concerned about it :counting: this is from their website.

    STELLAS STORY

Stella Rosa comes from a little town in Northern Italy where delicious sparkling wines are very common. Everyone drinks them. They knew this little secret for years and told no one. Originally, Stella was a red blend. Stella came to America a few years ago and everyone fell in love with this racy semi sweet Italian red wine.

Wasn't sure how sweet you wanted but that's what I think of when someone says sweet wine.
  • Not sure where you're from or if it's available in your area, but there's a NY Finger Lakes winery called Bully Hill that has a whole line called Sweet Walter. Their Sweet Walter Red would definitely classify as a "real" red wine and it's very sweet an excellent "starter" wine. They also have a wine called Banty Red which is also sweet, but not quite as sweet as the Sweet Walter. Unfortunately, this brand is generally only available in the northeast, though they can ship to some states for a price.

  • If you like a slight sweetness to your red wine, I recommend red Zinfandel. I prefer ones that are "old vine". Cline makes a nice red zin. There are lots of
great options from California, Oregon, Washington State, etc.
  • My mom likes sweet reds as well and she absolutely loves Lambrusco. It's pretty good, just a touch sweet for my tastes, but not as sweet as a dessert wine.

  • In my opinion red wine in moderation is okay, like a small glass from time to time. If you really want to have a glass and look out for baby, look for red wine that does not contain added sulfates. Sulfates are naturally occurring in red wine, that's why you look for wine that says no added sulfates. You can always ask a sales associate to help you!

  • I'm a substance abuse counselor and I was hesitant to chime in on this, but I felt I had to.  Research shows that ANY amount of alcohol can be harmful to a baby.  It is not about the type of alcohol or whether or not it is done in moderation.  Doctors are NOT correct (or practicing current best practices) if they are suggesting that drinking any alcohol during pregnancy is safe.  FASD can be 100% prevented.  Here is a link from the CDC on it.  Just had to share. https://www.cdc.gov/NCBDDD/fasd/facts.html
