Stupid storms.

So we have had some nasty thunderstorms every day here for about a week, and my dog is completely terrified of thunder. I preemptively have to drug him with xanax before any storm, which I have done all week. Unfortunately, for a few nights this week we have had to go out to functions for a wedding I am in, leaving the dog home alone during the storms. During these times he has clawed a big tear in the side of our brand new couch. This is not the first time, he completely ruined our last brand new couch due to being left alone during a thunderstorm. We used to crate him during a storm but he got so frenzied clawing at the crate door that he ripped his nails out (not pretty). I just dont know what to do anymore, my husband is at his wits end and said this was the last straw and he wants to get rid of the dog. I got him as a puppy 6 years ago, he is great with the baby, I am just so sad, I dont think my husband will really make me give him away but it is really stressing him out.

Glass of wine for listening to my whine.

  • Oh my gosh your poor dog. Does it help to leave the tv on? I'm sure he won't make you get rid of the dog he is probably just annoyed.

  • Does he have a thunder jacket? I dated a guy that had a sheltie that was TERRIFIED of thunder and he got him a thunder vest and it actually helped. He was obviously still scared but could actually walk around the house.

I dont think the TV would work because with it on when we are home and there is a storm he still goes crazy. I wonder if playing very loud white noise while we are gone would help though. He does prefer to go in the baby's room during a storm when we are home at night and her white noise is on.

No, we havent tried this. My hubs didnt want to spend $40 for a "sweater" he didn't think would work. I am kind of skeptical of it too.

  • Maybe you could find some where that would let you return the thunder jacket if it doesn't work. Poor guy.

  • Could you create spot he can hide under? Like a corner in your living room, under an end table or desk? Maybe lay a blanket over the side and lay with him and show him he can crawl underneath.
