Hi ladies, I thought you might get a kick out of this.
So, I had been dreading the shower my "interesting" mother-in-law was planning on throwing for me- although let me preface this by saying I am grateful she wanted to throw one and am thankful for the gift of the shower- I was just nervous about the tacky. I put on my big girl panties and was determined to grin and bear it.
People attending the shower were her, SIL, grandma, aunt and three friends of MIL on MIL's side- and then a couple of aunts and grandma from FIL's side. BAD BLOOD between MIL and FIL, but everyone is civil when it comes to events like this.
I'm not a game person, and of course there were games (sigh, oh well, they weren't too bad). I was pleasantly surprised, nothing was too bad, no diaper raffle or anything like that. I opened gifts, and here I am thinking, yay! nothing awful, we're almost done, people seem to have enjoyed themselves.
AND THEN--- Gifts were done being opened, and MIL announces, "Well, everyone, you know- whatever the mother-to-be says while opening her gifts is really what was said when the baby was conceived!" Nervous laughter from everyone in the room. MIL proceeds to READ OUT LOUD EVERYTHING I SAID WHILE OPENING GIFTS. This includes something about the house being two stories and something about butt paste. No one laughed. It was mortifying. MIL thought it was hilarious. FIL's side is super reserved and extremely Catholic. Yikes. Thank GOD this was at the end of the shower, LOL!
I can laugh now, but holy crap was that tacky. Sorry this was so long!
Re: Tack-tacular
"I've heard of that game for wedding showers. I don't really think it's a case of your MIL being tacky so much as not knowing her guests. With the right crowd, games like that go over well."
You are right about it being fun with the right people. Unfortunately, my MIL is not clueless about her guests, she just doesn't give a s*%t. She is a tacky person in general. I could see someone else being clueless, lol.
And to PP who was wondering if she knows it's her son I DTD with, yes, yes she does. She is a piece of work in general. This is the woman who, when we announced at Christmas we were expecting, exclaimed in front of her 3 existing grandchildren and daughter, "I'm going to be a grandma!" and exploded in happy tears as though it were the first time.
OMG! I can't believe she did that. I just love how some people think their humor is so funny, when really it is just so not appropriate. I would've freaked out, probably turned bright red because I do not like being the center of attention. It's weird, if I bring the attention on myself, I'm okay. But when it comes to events that are directed only for me, I get so uncomfortable!
I am 22 years old and my FI's family all loves to party and have get togethers and have a great time. (Not get out of hand, just have fun together!) At my baby shower, there obviously wasn't any alcohol and his aunt stated while I was opening presents, "Wow *insert my name*, I'm pretty shocked that there isn't any booze here, I'm surprised you aren't throwing them back while you're pregnant." She started laughing like it was SO funny, and my MIL nearly went crazy. It just wasn't appropriate to say, at all. Especially for the fact that I think I've maybe drank in front of her twice because I choose to drive when we are at their family get togethers because I think it's fair that my FI gets to have a good time with his cousins!
