Public tantrums

Please tell me I'm not the only person who has to haul a kicking and screaming kid out of the library, Best Buy, and gym class on a regular basis.

I swear I never see any other kids tantrum in public. But I'm probably just too busy paying attention to my own kid. It happens, though, right?

This is new territory for us. Until 2.5, he had maybe 3 meltdowns in his life. Now, we're averaging 3 a day, all in public. Sigh.

  • Yes, but it's usually on me because I push the limit on how many errands a 2.5 year old should be able to handle all at once. I pay dearly though. Serious meltdowns. When do they outgrow this phase?
  • Yes, my parents did it with me, and my DS is carrying the torch.

  • Oh yeah. I've mastered the walk of shame with DS in his infant carseat on my left arm and carrying dd like a sack of potatoes with my right. A kicking and screaming sack of potatoes. Doors are a problem in this situation. Lol.

I've done it before and I'm 100% positive I will do it again.

Yup, just did the other day.  I will put her in a time out in a secluded place in a store if I have to.  I don't care.

  • Every damn time. The park is the worst. It takes me about 15 mins to strap her in the stroller while she's kicking and screaming. She's. So. Strong.

I was doing that exact walk of shame one time..and fell.  It was humiliating on so many levels.

I just spit my coke out! I'm sorry but that was funny.
  • Yes.  Just yesterday, leaving the grocery store.  She was GREAT in the store,  but leaving she saw a coffee stand and some muffins and lost her mind asking for a treat.  I carried her out after reasoning and distracting failed.  I have a hold I use with her that keeps her from hitting/kicking/headbutting me.  It requires two arms though.  So embarrassing.  I also got my first judging look from an older lady who was walking in as I was leaving.

It has also happened at the park and at a book store.  It doesn't happen often, but it really sucks when it does.

Oh yes! You're not alone. I give him time outs right then and there in public. They're far shorter than at home time outs but they're highly effective.

My kid once had a tantrum on an airplane and it was the mostnbsp;traumatizing experience of my life, mostly because I couldn't just remove us from that setting. I actually cried on the plane. [:]
Oh yes. Last fall, we were THAT family on the plane.

  • Yes. You are not alone. I also have the potato sack carry down to a perfection, with the baby on my hip. No more infant car seat for us.

    Omg lol!!

  • Not alone. Once DS1 was fighting so hard he lost his pants in the McDonalds parking lot. I just laughed because it was so ridiculous
