Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Escaping from crib

I knew this day was coming...when we went in to check on our son this morning, we found him asleep on his floor surrounded by various clothes, sheets, towels (pulled from his hamper and drawers) and toys.  I really want to hold off on the toddler bed for as long as possible because he's so good at putting himself to sleep in his crib.  Once he realizes he can get up and play...I don't know what will happen!  I've heard of 'crib tents'.  Has anyone used one of these?  Can you recommend something?  Or should I just suck it up and go for the toddler bed?

Re: Escaping from crib

  • Suck it up and go to the bed or lower the crib mattress to the floor.  Crib tents have long since been recalled because of deaths.  Personally, I'd move him to a toddler bed.  If he can get out, he's more likely to hurt himself getting out of the crib than a toddler bed.  Make sure you fully toddler proof his room, including securing the furniture to the wall.

  • We are in the same boat! We are trying to decide if we want to go with the toddler bed or just go ahead and change it into a full. He is 21 months old (WAY too young in my opinion to be in a big boy bed.) Our daughter was closer to 3 when we changed her crib and it was so easy. She was at the age where she could really understand the concept, Landon on the other hand, I just don't see it! But he is getting out of his crib every single morning. Something has to give.
  • You could try a sleep sack. It hinders movement.

My son climbed out once and hasn't tried again. So maybe your LO won't either? If he is regularly climbing out, I would definitely transition to a toddler bed.
  • If it were me, I would do the toddle bed.  I am a first time mom so have no experience with this.  I have heard of plenty of moms that just close the door or put up a baby gate to keep the kid at least in the room.  I think it just comes with the territory.  I agree with a PP poster that it would be safer than climbing out of the crib all the time.

  • IMO, suck it up and switch to the toddler bed!  DD slept in that until she was 3-4yo when she finally out-grew it (we were in the midst of purchasing a 2nd house so didn't want to switch the bed over to a double).  Whether or not you're ready, for safety, it's just not worth the risk and you're going to have to teach LO to stay in bed, may as well do it now...

  • My friends whose son is 22 months just took the mattress support out and put the crib mattress on the floor.  They put a couple egg crate mats under it.  Buys them a few more inches and months since they definitely weren't ready to make the switch to a toddler bed.
  • My friend has twin boys that are 2 years old and she LOVES the crib tent- I don't know what brand- but it's all mesh and goes over the top of the crib and zips up- she swears by it.....

Sleep sack for sure!  It's a blanket and they can't use their legs.  Win Win
