Can restaurants re-run bills?

This is horribly embarrassing but I realized that I miscalculated a tip on a restaurant bill and was wondering if restaurants can re-run your bill or let you do a new copy of the receipt with the correct tip? Obviously I can go back and give money to the waitress but since it was work related I would like to have the accurate number on the bill.

ughhhh this literally hit me at 430 am when I woke up in the night for some reason and I am so upset right now and don't think I can go back to sleep...crap.

I don't work in a restaurant, rather in retail, but typically once the day is zeroed out, we can't do anything with your credit card.

  • If it were just about paying the additional money, probably. But then you'd wind up with a bill dated for the wrong day/time since you found out long after the fact.

If it's just about the tip, I'd let it slide unless the waitress was exceptional, then I'd give her a bit of a tip or a gift card for the local coffee shop or something.

  • Not after they've done the CC machine for the night. I'd just write her a note and drop off some cash. Although, if the total you did was correct, but just the tip was wrong, the transaction is completed for the total, regardless of addition errors.

How much money are you talking about?  Like you owe her another $10?  I'd go back and give it in cash and not care about expensing it.

    Ditto.

  • How strict is your work's receipt policy and is it easy for you to get back to the restaurant and drop off the extra cash?

I think at our office you can be reimbursed for up to $20 in cash without an associated receipt.  Or could you maybe just write on the credit card receipt "additional ___ in cash given as tip" and if it makes sense in the context of the total bill, get it approved?

Otherwise I would call the restaurant and plead your case -- maybe say you're willing to re-read your CC# to them over the phone so they can run it again?

Why is this so upsetting? I'm seriously curious. Is it because your work will see the receipt and think you are a crappy tipper? Just go drop some cash off and forget about this.

    Haha, this.

Bad karma, not giving someone their due and then on top of it someone at work seeing it. All of the above really.  I just feel really terrible, I don't like to under tip and I know that it really pisses wait staff off and while I'll likely never see her again it just makes me feel crappy.
