Dental work?

I think I may have a cavity.

Would you go to dentist now, wait for 3rd trimester or wait until after delivery?

I know that there is really no risk of local anesthetic getting to baby, but I always worry about problems after the procedure, like infection, etc.

Re: Dental work?

  • At least go in and have it checked out. If he thinks its severe enough to be filled he can always discuss it with your ob.

  • I would go now.  I feel like you're asking for more trouble by waiting than by getting it done now.  My MIL is my dental hygienist and has been very adamant about me going in and making sure everything is good in there throughout this pregnancy.

  • I've had some dental work done while pregnant. They will have your ob send them paperwork. Just avoid Xrays, and they have novacane that most OBs approve.

  • Go get it checked! They recommend getting dental work done in the second trimester, unless it is an emergency. I had a cavity filled 2 weeks ago and I can't imagine trying to do that in the 3rd tri with a huge belly compressing my blood vessels.

  • get it checked now BUT also check your insurance to see if you also get any additional benefits during pregnancy, I got an additional free cleaning and check up last week because of being pregnant!
  • Get it checked! Make sure to let them know when you make an apt that you are pregnant. I go for a cleaning on Monday and having them check out a tooth that has been bothering me. Since pregnancy can do weird things do your body and mouth, don't make it worse by waiting too long.

Wrong, you can get an X-ray... and will need one if you have a cavity, just cover your belly with an extra lead apron. I just got a tooth pulled a few weeks ago:( and went through this. The Dentist called and had my OB send everything that was OK in writing. X-rays are OK like I stated and no epi in numbing (epi makes it last longer and helps with less bleeding but I didn't have any issues without using it. Good luck! Better to do it now then when you are more uncomfortable in 3rd tri sitting for a time. I also used to be a dental asst and knew this info, but was confirmed by my OB was comforting in a way. Sorry for non clicky

  • I need major work like oral surgery followed by a root canal I was advised to wait after delivery

  • I just had a cavity filled last week, doctor said its best to do dental work during 2nd tri because if you wait to the 3rd it can be very uncomfortable lying on your back for an extended period of time. granted my filing took all of 20 minutes but I still had to ask her to stop so I could sit up and take a good breath

Not necessarily. I didn't get an Xray for my cavity filling.

  • Go now. I had a root canal done during my early third tri last time and it was fine, other than the fact that it was uncomfortable staying in the chair for that long. They did let me lay on my side in between stuff though to help. But anyway, 2nd tri is ideal because you won't be as big and if you wait until after delivery it may get worse and you may need a root canal.

  • Unless you've had xrays taken very recently it is likely the dentist will need to take one to see the depth.  It will make an impact on their treatment plan.  The level of radiation in dental xrays is extremely low, especially if digital xrays are used.  It's better to get checked and avoid the situation getting worse than put it off.  Good luck!
  • My doctor pretty much made me go to the dentist because of the negative effects baby can have on teeth and/or dental problems can have on baby?  Not really sure but they would not X-ray me.  They did, however, fill a couple of small cavities last week and do local needle numbing and give me some sweet samples.
