Early Gender Determination??

Hey friends!

I'm thinking about asking my doctor about getting an early ultrasound to be able to find out the gender of my baby.  My next appt is on the 9th and I'll be 11w6d at that point.  I'm hoping they can get me in before the 17th (between 12 and 13 weeks).  Has anyone gotten their gender told early and has it been accurate?  Is it worth asking the OB to see?

I'm going home to visit my family in MO and my husband's family will be down visiting from CO, and we want to be able to tell them in person, since the original baby announcement had to be done over Skype.

Any thoughts on this would be most welcome!!

Thanks, lovlies!!

  • I am almost sure that it is too early. But
I am not an expert so ask you Dr. what he/she thinks..

  • Between 12 and 13 weeks is too early.  At 15 weeks, my OB guessed incorrectly (but honestly told us she was guessing because the cord was in the way).  By 18 weeks it was clear.

  • The u/s tech guessed girl at our NT scan.  I was 12w3d.  I wouldn't put too much stock in it yet.  Before about 16w .... it's an educated guess.

  • Too early. You'll have to cool your jets for several more weeks. Sorry.

  • We were told incorrectly at 15weeks by the Dr. My Dr was also told by her Dr incorrectly at 15weeks. There is so much swelling in that area at that time that it's a crap shoot.
Depending on your area, you can get a blood test as early as 12 weeks.

  • You could get a blood test at 10 weeks (MaterniT21, and a few others) but it can take two weeks to get the results. You insurance may not pay for it if you do not meet certain conditions. If not, it's $200 out of pocket. Or, you could just wait! I know, the anticipation is killing me too.  :)

  • That's way to early. Boy parts typically don't show up till at least 17 weeks. I would just wait till the anatomy scan.

  • Odd man out, here. They gave me a guess with DS at my n/t scan at 13 wks and some change, and they were right. You still can't put too much stock into it though until later.

  • I found out both my boys gender at my NT scan, both were done between 12 and 13 weeks. I think it depends a lot of position, the tech and how experienced they are and the equipment they are using.
At both scans we could very clearly see boy parts and even got pics of them.
But I have also heard many people say that they couldn't tell or the tech wouldn't even give them a guess. So I really do think its rare to find out that early.

  • This is a pretty interesting link explaining early determination of the baby's sex.  I found it though Selfie's website (The art of Making a Baby).
