Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When did you stop using white noise machine?

My LO is 9 months old and I use a white noise machine in his room every night to help him sleep. He sleeps 1112 hrs straight a night. We are going on vacation soon and I don't really want to pack up the machine and bring it with us, so I'm thinking of trying to have him go without it for a week before we leave, but I'm scared he's so used to it and won't sleep as well.
Just curious if anyone has used a sound machine and if they have stopped how did it go?

Re: When did you stop using white noise machine?

  • We haven't tried yet but I know my mom has a portable sound machine thats easy to pack up and bring on vacation, it runs on batteries and has a cord if you chose to use it that way.  Just a thought.  A sudden change in sleeping rituals might be hard for you child.  I know when you're away from your home for an extended period of time you want to keep things as normal as possible.  I know from experience.  But be prepared for them to not sleep well at night since they're in a new place.

My DD is 3 and she still uses hers.  At first I didn't want to stop because we were moving.  Then I wanted her to be comfortable in the new house.  Then we moved again, and I wanted her to be comfortable again.  Then came DS and I needed something to drown out his MOTN cries when I was nursing him.  So I guess I'm no help.

Also, we have portable sound machines so it always went with us when we travelled.  DS also has white noise that I have no intention of stopping anytime soon.

  • Mine is 11 months old. We still use it.

However, we don't use a machine. I have an iPod, which until he was born was just sitting in a drawer. I downloaded a "White Noise App" for $2 and I play that all night long/during naps (while it's plugged in, so it never shuts off). When I forget the iPod, I have the same app on my phone and so does SO.

    It's the best $2 I've ever spent.

If you don't want to go that route, there's this:  https://www.amazon.com/Cloud-Machine-Soother-Gentle-Giraffe/dp/B001S5E0RU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372292123&sr=8-1&keywords=gentle+giraffe+big

DS has it, mainly because we got it at my shower, but it serves the same purpose. It has a white noise option. You can get it at Target or BRU.

  • I don't plan on ever stopping. I use a fan for myself and H to sleep and find it soothing, I've always slept with one. Is the machine really that big? We always take ours. Or you could download an app if you have a smartphone.

We have an ipod touch and an iphone. We use the ipod touch in her room and the iphone in ours (so that there's still white noise if I bring her into bed to nurse in teh night). Both are hooked up to stereo/ipod speaker things. The app we use is SimplyNoise. It was $0.99 and we use the "brown" noise option. Best buck I've ever spent. It's awesome. I have no intention of stopping it. I suspect we may try to phase it out (which is very easy to do - just lower the volume a little bit over the course of several weeks) around age 2 or something. I'm not worried about it. Our ipod speaker things fold up and travel very easily.
  • Don't mess with success, especially on vacation! You'll want the nights there to be as close as possible to how he sleeps at home. We have iPhones, and use a free white noise app, so it is easy to have it wherever we go.

  • NEVER!!! LOL I don't care if he goes to college needing a white noise machine. If that's the worst I do to him, I'm doing pretty good. Ha!
  • We always bring ours when traveling.  Not sure how big yours is that would keep you from wanting to bring it, but I've pretty much accepted that with the baby, we bring about twice as much stuff as we used to anyways.  When flying, we just jam everything into a large suitcase and check it.  When on the road, it's easier to pack bags for each of us, but the noise machine definitely gets included.  As others have said, though, there is an app for that, too.

As a side note, though, I am curious about when to stop using it.  I was at church when he was only 3 months old and we had a portable one with him to help keep him asleep.  Another mother admired it and commented that her 5 and 6 year olds still use their noise machines at night.  I really can't imagine using it that long!

  • DD is 4 and uses hers. DH and I sleep with white noise as well. When we're away from home we just use fans for everyone.

We do this, but we use "White Noise Lite", which is free.  It's available for Kindles too.

  • I never take it with me she never seems to care if it's on or not. At home it's on 24/7 but even if we don't use it she still sleeps normal

am currently on vacation and use an app on my phone called "Sleep Pillow." It helps my baby sleep so why not? Also when I don't do that I keep a fan going in the room.
