Emergency contact question

Do your daycare emergency contacts have a carseat(s) for your child(ren)?  No one that we would put down would have a carseat (with the exception of one person who could use her kids' if she left her kids with someone else while picking mine up).  Plus, our seats are always in our cars so it's not like someone could go to our house and get our seats.  I have trouble wrapping my brain around this and am curious how other people handle it.

Re: Emergency contact question

  • No, our in-home daycare does not have a carseat.

If there were an emergency, I assume they would call 911.  If it is a sickness or something, I go pick her up.

  • I have emergency contacts with kids close in age so that they have something for carseats already. I had one situation where DS2 was admitted to the hospital, DS1 was at daycare, and DH was away on a business trip. I stayed at the hospital with DS2, and needed someone to pick up DS1 before daycare closed. My friend went to pick him up and used her son's carseat, and she sent her husband to get their son in his car. I wouldn't have imagined that scenario until I had to deal with it.

  • Yes, my mom does. My dad doesn't, but if he had to pick up DS, he'd stop and get my mom's car and leave her his truck.

  • My mom is the emergency contact and she does have a carseat for each of my kids in her truck so that isn't an issue.  If either of us travel or anything we leave one at the daycare so there is one on backup just in case.  Not sure how that will be handled if we can't leave one at DS's school but we most likely won't have to face that issue since my mom can leave work in a true emergency.

  • Our daycare actually keeps 1-2 car seats on site to be borrowed in true emergency situations

  • My mom has carseats for the kids b/c she frequently watches them or picks them up at DC for me.  But MIL is also on the emergency contact list and she does not have carseats.  I really can't forsee a reason why both me and my mom would not be able to pick up the kids.  I had MIL pick them up from DC one time when I had to travel for work, and that was planned weeks ahead of time so we had DH install his carseats in her car.

That's such a great idea!  Unfortunately, our families don't live nearby so we don't have anyone who ever takes care of the kids and therefore have a car seat.  I have two friends, each an hour away, who could theoretically pick them up but one doesn't have kids and the other has one child and therefore one seat but she'd almost definitely have to have her son with her.  The one person I'm thinking of putting down is our former daycare provider who just moved back to the area.

  • This was a major issue with our first DC provider, she had extra seats, wanted DD picked up NOW, but wouldn't let my mom borrow a seat for a few hours.  Our current daycare has my mom as an emergency contact, but really I don't know how that would work since she may have a seat for DD now, but she won't have one for the new LO.  I always end up leaving work, but thankfully it's not too often.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • My FIL does.

My BF is the contact if DH and I and my FIL are all unavailable.  She has two kids and is a SAHM.  If something were to happen and at least one of her kids was at school/preschool, I'm sure she could make one of her two carseats work for DD.  In a super emergency (and it would have to be bad to get to our fourth-in-line contact), I would rather have DD in the non-harnessed booster seat my friend's second grader uses for the 10 minute ride to my friend's house than truly stranded at school risking social services involvement for an abandoned child or something like that.

  • Lucky for you I have two carseats and a sister down the street to drop my kid off at if I had to.  Am I on your emergency contact list?

  • One of ours does have a car seat LO could ride in.  She picks her up occasionally.  I have switched cars with my other sitter before and she's just taken mine with the car seat to pick up DD.

LOL you always have been and now we got our annual paperwork to make any updates and it got me thinking about the car seat issue.  I didn't know you had two seats and it's only that I have two littles now that I even wondered what the heck I should do :)

  • Our daycare has strict orders to call me first (I can almost always leave at a moment's notice), DH next, and if they can't reach us, they are to call MIL (who has a seat since she's the closest emergency contact and therefore the one we expected to need one most). After that it's FIL (no seat), and my parents (who may have a seat that will work soon as they often watch/drive with my nephew who is 2 years younger than DS). We've never had them get beyond MIL, and they've only gotten that far once in the 2.5 years he's been in daycare.

Yes I have two seats.  And I could drop Asher with Chelle or Phill on the way. Plus Chelle has an infant bucket seat from Ethan.   Plus honestly in a real emergency and there was no way you or  R could get there, I'd stop at target and get the cheapest thing that could get us from point a to point b safely if I had to.

  • No, but for us it doesn't really matter because DS1 walks home and DS2 is in a stroller that we keep at his DCP. We take the train to work and our car is home so if they needed to get to the car, they could do that, also.
  • I have MIL and my sister as emergency contacts, my sister has a spare car seat because she used to watch LO weekly. MIL does not.

Shamefully I've not thought about this scenario, my sister is the first contact after us so it wouldn't be a problem for her. Not sure what would happen if all three of us were unavailable and MIL had to get LO, I guess she'd have to run to the store on the way? I dunno. It seems pointless to go out and buy a seat on the super rare chance that me, H and my sister are all unavailable in an emergency and she has to go pick up LO from daycare right.this.second.

  • My emergency contacts are my parents (my mom has a car seat) and then my 'last resort' contact does not have a car seat.  If he needed to pick DS up in a pinch, the daycare center has an extra car seat which can be borrowed and installed in his car.

In addition, when DS was in the infant carrier, we would leave the carrier at daycare so it was always there when someone went to pick him up.
