If you are thinking about the MIRENA

I just went today and had it put in.  I don't know about anyone else thinking about getting one but I was most nervous about it being inserted and if it would hurt so here is what happened at the appt.

Pre-appointment I took two Ibprofen.

1. they put in the speculum (this is a bit uncomfortable at 7 wks pp)

2. then they clean off your cervix and put iodine on it. Didn't feel this at all.

2 B. Oops forgot she then sprayed something called Hurrican spray on the cervix to numb it a bit?  This actually burned slightly, not sure why.

3. they put this thing that kind of looks like a dip stick through the cervix to measure the uterus or something. Also didn't feel this at all

4. She inserted the mirena this took about 15 seconds and I might have felt a little pinch but otherwise nothing.

So far I have spotted a bit and maybe have something you might describe as cramps but they are so mild that if I hadn't been told I would have cramping I don't know if I would really feel them if you know what I mean.

To wrap it all up. As of now I would definitely do it again. I hope the next few months go well with minimal spotting.

Re: If you are thinking about the MIRENA

  • I'm still considering it so let me know how the next few weeks/months go.  If I get it then it won't be til March.  I hope you like it.

BTW my DH was in Waukesha in June for work.  I didn't realize you lived there.  Just a random fact ;)

  • My OB wants me to have AF when I get it put in.  Not sure why, but that's the plan.  Glad it wasn't too bad.
  • Thanks! I am going to do this after #2.

  • I've had mine for a year.. i LOVE it! No complaints here! I love not taking a pill every day.
  • i have the paraguard and absolutely LOVE it.  i haven't had any problems or discomfort.  i will never use a bcp again.
  • thanks! I am also considering mirena after this baby (but won't need until after March also). Please let us know how your periods are etc.
  • I had a very similar experience...I've had mine since July and LOVE IT! I had minimal spotting and regular periods right away...month before last I only bled for one day...this month was three days (VERY Light)!

I hope it works as well for you as it has for me.

    Exactly - I've had mine 1 1/2 years and I LOVE IT!

  • Insertion was not a big deal for me either. . . I had it during one of my periods later on instead of immediately pp.

My experience was frustrating because of the bleeding. . . I spotted for about a month which I expected, but then I bled for 2 weeks each month for 8 months (it was light, but it was 2 weeks which was annoying).

  • I got the paragard- same thing except it's an IUD without any hormones.  I LOVE the thing.  It was virtually painless to put in.  I had a little cramping that day, but barely noticeable.  The only annoying issue I had was major spotting (like need a tampon spotting) for 2 full weeks.  Then I got my period.  But after that, it's as though I don't use BC.  I wish I had thought about getting this when I was BF'ing for a year, but at least I have it now.

My sister had hers put in about 5 or 6 months ago now and she is so happy she did it.  She hasn't had any issues with it!
