Evenflo Snugli vs. Ergo

Just looking for some insight into these 2 carriers.  After much research, I registered for an Ergo.  Recently, my cousin has offered a lot of her baby stuff to me, as she and her DH are done having children.  She has an Evenflo Snugli carrier that she is offering to me for free.  How does this carrier compare?  Is it an infamous "crotch-dangler"?

Basically, I'm trying to determine whether is worth accepting for free and taking the Ergo off my registry (could always buy later if I don't like the Snugli), or whether I should decline it or accept it, but still keep the Ergo on my registry.

Re: Evenflo Snugli vs. Ergo

  • A Snugli is a crotch dangler. Some people don't mind using them a little bit with a baby under 15 lb, but the comfort (for both mom and baby) of a good carrier is just so much better.

Don't take the Ergo off the registry. Whether you want to try the Snuggli and make up your own mind is up to you.

  • I have both- the snugli was bought for us for a baby shower gift. It's ok to use for VERY short periods of time. After using it just a couple of time I went out to babies r us and bought myself the ergo. I love the ergo- sooooooo much better comfort wise. I'd get the ergo for sure!!!!

  • How old is your cousin's snuggli?  They have made one in the last couple of years that is not a crotch dangler and is similar to the ergo.  I've never used it, but if it is that one, I would probably take the ergo off the registry.  If it's an older of different snuggli model then I would keep both.  I had a snuggli (the "bad" kind) and it was great for short walks when the girls were newborn/smaller.  But over time I collected a snuggli, wrap, ring sling, ergo and mei tai, so I had to downsize.

  • I would take it, and keep the Ergo on your registry. I personally liked the Bjorn type when baby was really tiny (12 lbs max) and I wasn't ready to buy the Ergo yet. It was better for us than the Moby for certain things. We didn't use it often, but it seemed more secure for chores and constant up and down things. I never used it for long, and it still makes me go "Oww their poor backs" when I see someone at the mall, or an amusement park with one, but they do have their place as an intro carrier.

  • Someone gave me a Snugli as a hand me down - the old crotch dangler kind and to be honest I really like it. It has more padding than Bjorn (also a hand me down.) My DS is very small (0 percentile weight) so maybe that is why. It killed my back in the beginning but I realized I didn't have the straps on tight enough for me. Now it isn't so bad. He's secure in it when I'm doing chores or grocery shopping. When I "wear" him for long periods or when I know he'll fall asleep I use my Maya wrap. I didn't have the money to get an Ergo so I made due with the hand me down and it's fine. My maya wrap I got off Craig's list, and I love that :)
