Coffee

I can't help but feel guilty for drinking a cup of coffee a day. I've tried not to and I get these horrible headaches. I feel like I can't make it through my 12 to 15 hour work days without it! I know they say you can drink up to 2 cups a day. Any moms to be out there drinking a little coffee? Or just gave it up all together?

Re: Coffee

  • I gave it up completely with my first daughter. I have an occasional cup this time around. They wouldn't tell you that you could if it was that bad. Especially at this point in pregnancy I don't feel guilty. The pain of a headache could do more harm, raising your blood pressure, stressing you out. IMO

  • I had 1 cup a day all through my 2nd pregnancy and my son is just fine. I am now on my 3rd pregnancy and I drink 1 cup of coffee a day and I am not giving it up! I did buy some decaf just because I enjoy drinking coffee not just a pick me up. You can always discuss with your Dr.
  • Yes, it's fine. It gets me to the gym! xo

I have a cup every other day or so. I also feel a little guilty but I do it for the headaches too and I figure that its better for me not to be in pain than to hold out over a misplaced sense of guilt!

W my last pregnancy, baby's now one, after 3rd tri I had a cup every afternoon bc I was so tired after work. Baby is 1000 percent healthy!
  • I used to drink coffee daily, quit for the entire first trimester and now I have a cup a week. I usually feel more guilty when I have soda for some reason. I say drink up, especially to get you through those long hours.
    Welcome Lily Anna!

I do it because I am so tired.  I feel guilty, but I still drink it a few times a week.  It is ok to drink up to 200mg a day, I drink much less than that so I know it's ok.  I am just a worrier.  It's fine :)

  • With both pregnancies I abstained from coffee totally through 1st tri. I have a cup when I feel like it now, though not every day. I did start drinking coffee again earlier this pregnancy than I did with DD. My OB is pretty conservative and she told me that a small cup a day is totally fine. I wouldn't worry about it!

  • With my first I tried to stop drinking it, but I get migraine. A cup of coffee and a tylenol are a makeshift excedrin migraine.  It's okay to have a cup or 2 a day of coffee.

With this pregnancy I have a cup every day.  I figure, my first was fine and Dr. said it's okay.

I have one cup every day too! My dr. said the same thing as everyone else. Under 200mg a day ok. One shot of espresso only has 75mg of caffeine so a tall skim latte, it only has one shot,  a day is way less than what they say you can have! I have been loving my lattes!

...and I might add that I have been super regular and the cup of coffee usually clears up my morning headaches! It's delightful!

  • I have 1 cup every morning. I did all during my last pg and every morning during this pg. Zero guilt here.

  • Try not to feel guilty. I didnt have any during the first tri mainly bc I couldn't stomach it. I started drinking one cup a day once the m/s was done. My ob said she had one cup of coffee and a diet coke every day during all 3 of her pregnancies. She advised me not to beat myself up over caffeine. Apparently all studies on it have shown that it takes very high amounts to actually cause a problem. Enjoy your cup!
  • I've been having a 6 oz cup of coffee every morning.  Okay I confess---some days it's 8 oz.  Start the judgment now.
  • Thanks everyone, definitely feeling a lot better about it :0

This. I think the strength of the coffee matters more than the number of ounces, so I just water mine down and put a lot of milk in it so it's weak. And yes, I drink it every day - my doctor said it was fine.

Unfortunately, I have had serious cravings for iced coffee this pregnancy. I have one every now and again but never more than one a day. Try not to stress too much about having a cup. The pressure you put on yourself over it will probably affect you more than your the caffeine ever will.

  • I have a cup every morning, sometimes 2.

  • I have 1/2 cup to 1 cup every day with the occasional pepsi thrown in.  I do watch how much I'm drinking but I'm not worried at all at this point.
  • I drink a small cup a day, or a large cup of decaf (because it still has a bit in it). Did it with my first two and so far with my third pregnancy.

I avoid sugared sodas. And I especially avoid the diet sodas. I'm just not on board with that stuff.
But at least then  you know exactly how much caffeine you're consuming, while with a cup of coffee you're just eye-balling it.

  • Depending on the source 200300mg caffeine per day is allowed. So, for me that affords me 4 servings of my instant espresso powder. There is 5050mg per tsp. I mix it half and half with decaf coffee for a large cup. This helps me control the mg of caffeine I take in a day, but I still enjoy 24 coffees a day.
  • Apparently hyphens don't work on my iPhone mobile app. Lol. My espresso has 50mg per tsp. I try to keep it to 2 or 3 a day, but on a rough day I can have 4 guilt free. I haven't been craving chocolate or pop at all, so my only caffeine is from coffee and occasional tea.
