XP - Question from 2nd tri about swaddles

Hey ladies -

Lurker from 2nd Tri/November BMB, and hope you don't mind me asking a question. I'm putting together my registry, and I'm trying to figure out swaddles. What ones have you used so far and what did you like about them? I have Woombies on there, but know there are so many more kinds - SwaddleMe sacks, Halo sleep swaddle sacks, etc. I am so clueless. Thanks!

  • Honestly, I would only register for one or two, and wait to see if you LO even likes being swaddled. My LO wouldn't let us swaddle her arms in from day 1, though we used both the swaddleme and halo sleep sacks for warmth while it was still cold out. I wish I had at least waited to wash them all so I could have retuned some of them. Just something to think about!

  • We used the miracle blanket with DS1. They wore out and are expensive, so we got Aden and Anais muslin blankets for Ds2 and swaddle with them. He can bust out now that he's older, but he's rolling while swaddled now anyway, so our swaddling days are coming to an end. I like that we will still have use of the blankets even though we won't swaddle with them soon.

  • I like the halo swaddle sleep sacks. Our hospital gave us one and my daughter loves it. In the beginning I honestly just swaddled with receiving blankets because that is how the NICU nurses did and I thought she was too small for the sleep sack. Once we stated using the sleep sack.... I realized I probably should have done that the whole time

The good thing about these to me is that once they are too big to have their arms swaddled you can just wrap the "swaddle" part around their waist / under their arms which we have started doing in the last week.

Good luck with your pregnancy and congratulations mama!

This. DS1 loved being swaddled and we used the Swaddle Me. DS2 hated bring swaddled from day one so he has always used a regular sleep sack. You never know!

  • We used the Swaddle Me and the A&A swaddle blankets. At on point we had to swaddle her in the A&A first and then put her in the Swaddle Me to keep her from breaking free.

  • Thank you! I was only going to get one or two, and maybe try different brands. Sounds like that is the way to go. I put the SwaddleMe in the small/medium (7-14lbs) and the Halo in the small size (13-18lbs).

  • we used the swaddle me microfleece for the first 1-2 months and then he outgrew them in length so we switched to the knit halo swaddle sleep sack.  both have worked great for us.

  • We had 2 swaddlemes and 2 halo sleep sacks with the swaddle wings.

DS didn't really like being swaddled, but since its colder here we used all of them to keep him warm at night, but always kept his arms out of the swaddle.  the other problem we had was size, ds is just a little guy.  We couldn't put ds in the newborn size halo until he was about  a month, for fear he would slip down into it.  we were able to use the swaddlemes with some careful folding.

We just use blankets, no special swaddle suits or sacks. We have found that a 40X40 blanket someone made us worked really well until the last week or so. My mom made us four more that are 45X45 or larger and they are working great. I'm probably going to get a woombie soon though to start transitioning out of the swaddle.

  • We've gone through several different swaddlers and I think certain things work better at certain ages.

First couple weeks - receiving blankets

    3weeks to 2 months - A A blankets

2 months plus - Miracle blanket

After the first couple months your baby will most likely be able to bust out of most regular blankets used to swaddle and you'll need a more specialized blanket made specifically for swaddling. I highly recommend the Miracle Blanket for this purpose. DS is 5 months old and we're still using it.

Lastly, a couple PPs mentioned that some babies don't like to be swaddled. I think that if you ever want to sleep your going to need to swaddled.
