Discordance

Up until today my twins have measured the same or at least very close. Now there is a 20 percent discordance between them. I have weekly u/s as it is with BPPs every other week. My ob wants to see what happens in the next two weeks before giving a diagnosis. Has anyone been through this before?

Re: Discordance

  • What type of twins are you having?  Mine are di/di and 2 weeks ago they found a 23% discordance.  I just saw a MFM for the first time today and by their machines the boys were only 12% different, and were well over 50% for weight anyways.  I'm guessing you are not carrying di/di if you are being monitored that much.  I don't have any other experience or advice, but good luck and I'll be thinking about you!

  • No. I am having di di twins. I have lupus which carried the risk if heart block so I have had weekly ultrasounds since 17 weeks to watch for it.

  • oh ok,   I am not sure how Lupus factors into the growth of your babies, but from what I was told by my OB and MFM is that there is less likely to be a real problem with di/di twins who have a discordance, unless one of the placenta's isn't functioning as it should be.  It is more likely that one baby is just going to be bigger than the other. I do think it's good that they will re-check in 2 weeks though! Try not to worry until they rescan the babies. How big were your babies measuring? Hopefully everything will check out okay!

  • Baby a is 3lb4oz and baby b is 2lb6oz. Baby b is only up 2oz since the last BBP 2 weeks ago while a is up 12oz from 2 weeks ago.
  • aww that is a pretty big difference for the two.  I am sorry you are going through this! I will definitely keep you in my thoughts & prayers.  Try to stay positive and not worry unless they give you a reason to.  I know that is easier said than done.  Keep us updated!!

  • We have a big size discord between our twins, but the smaller one is measuring right on for her dates and is in the 33rd percentile. Because of this my Dr. Isn't concerned, but I do have to have more frequent monitoring. My boy is measuring 10 days ahead and is of the charts with some measurements, others in the 8090th percentile.

Is your smaller baby measuring behind at all?
