Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I thought colic was supposed to go away at 3 months...

My baby is almost 14 weeks old and suddenly he's colicy.  He has always had fussy times, and sometimes very upset times, but they were few and far between.  Now he screams every night.  He's done this for a week!  He also has screaming fussy times during the day.  I'd say growth spurt but it's been over a week now!  Oh and he went from sleeping a 5 to 6 hour chunk at night to waking up every 2 hours again like a newborn.  Argh!

  • I remember thinking the same thing right around that timeframe, around when he turned three months. At first I was thinking growth spurt, but then it lasted weeks. He would have screaming fits at least once a day where there was nothing we could do to console him. He is back to his normal self now, and has been for a couple weeks. He has also increased his food intake considerably so that may have been at least part of the issue. Make sure LO is getting enough to eat. Hang in there!

  • Have you taken him to the pedi to rule out an ear infection? The only symptom my DS1 ever had was increased fussiness. He didn't even run a fever. It might be worth a visit just to make sure.

  • He's probably overtired.  Is it mostly in the evening? Try putting him to bed earlier.  Babies this age do best with bedtimes between 6-8.

This exactly. DD started to do this and screamed for 3 hours one night and NOTHING helped soothe her. I took her to the doctor and she has a double ear infection. She had no other symptoms and she was only like that at night. Our pedi said its like that in some kids. So I would have LO checked out just to be on the safe side. And if its not an ear infection or illness, then maybe your pedi can help provide some answers. Good luck!
