VBAC

first appt...XP from Jan 14

Well I had a my first appt today (baby looks great) and found out some good news and bad news about my hopes for a VBAC.

The good news is that the hospital closest to me is looking into allowing VBAC's and I should know by August whether or not it's an option.

The bad news is that the OB I saw today said they haven't set the criteria for which people are qualified candidates or not yet.  I asked about length between births and he said he really didn't know that he would have the answer when they decided.  I specifically asked about 18 months (that's how long it will be between births) and he didn't sound promising about it.  He also said they most likely whatever they decide will coincide with other surrounding hospitals that do allow VBAC's saying that if I wasn't allowed at one I wouldn't be allowed at any others.

Who knows if this is true.....but I made another appt at the hospital about 35 min away that does do VBAC's.  This dr may tell me the same thing, but I want a second opinion from a place that is currently doing VBAC's.

I guess this is more of a vent, but I really want to try a VBAC, of course I want a healthy baby and safe delivery....but I really want a VBAC! (pulling myself together and getting over it!)

Re: first appt...XP from Jan 14

  • It is so hard to find supportive vbac obs. I am due Jan 4 and I am doing it at home because of this reason. My babies will also be 18 months apart.  Not trying to sell you on home birth over hospital, but my midwife says that uterine ruptures are less likely than a prolapsed cord and that most of the vbac fatality(sp) statistics come from hospital vbacs where the woman is induced.  Maybe start looking around for a midwife. Or you can always do what my MIL did. Stay home til you are 8 cm and then go in to deliver so they have no choice..lol. Not recommending that one ;) Good luck hun, I know how much it means to me to have a vbac so I can totally relate to your frustration.

  • Thanks for your response. I have considered the midwife option..stupid insurance is a little bit tricky with that but if this next appt still doesn't show much promise I may try to find a midwife, has to be approved through insurance, and then go from there.

I think being informed is important and even if they all agree that a VBAC isn't an option at least I will feel like I looked into every option.

  • Hope the other dr gives you better news!! I had my first ob appt today and my doctor gave me a 70% chance of a vbac. I had high blood pressure by the end but I had and emergency c-section because DD had a knot in her cord and her heart rate almost flat lined. I'm grateful our hospital is pro-vbacs but it really depends on baby and my BP.
