Help! Picky eater

I need advice from you other momma's out there with "picky" eaters!!

DS can eat like no other, he would probably eat all day if we let him. The problem is when it comes to trying new things. He refuses to try things that do not look familiar.  If it doesn't look right to him he doesn't want it. I am not sure the best way to go about getting him to try new things.

Right now I put it on his tray and let him sit there with it in hopes he will eventually eat some and like it. I am not sure if this is the best way to do it with a 14 month old or if I should try something else.

Any suggestions would be awesome!

  • We have this issue, too. He has no problem putting carpet fuzz in his mouth but trying something new at dinner time... Forget it.

  • It's part of the age.  I agree with AA (as usual) that it might take a while before he tries something, and I think you're doing exactly what you should be in terms of continuing to offer.

  • Are you serving your child different food than what you are eating? That could be attributing to the problem. It doesn't sound like your child is at the table with you either. LO will try anything I give her, but if she doesn't like it she will hand it back to me. Our meals are the same and 9/10 times she see's her food being taken directly from my plate, onto hers and then placed in front of her at the table.

I agree that children need to be introduced to something several times before they will be willing to try it, but I'm not sure if i agree with that for under 2yo. At this age they are more imitators by nature than anything else. Monkey see, monkey do.

  • We have the same exact problem. You are not alone. My DD will not eat anything new.

  • I will wait until ds is pretty hungry and only offer what I want him to try... in our case veggies.  If we sit down to eat dinner and he sees bread on the table then all bets are off that he will try anything.  DH and I have resorted to only eating veggies and meats first... or whatever we want lo to try. If we are having some bread, it has to stay on the oven out of sight until the end of dinner.
