So, I've been registered since 1996 and I've never been matched to anyone that needs a bone marrow. Can't believe it. Not that I wanted to be a match or donate but I would if it ever happened.
I had sort of forgotten about my registery and then got a letter in the mail asking me to confirm my address.
Anyone else been registered for that long?
Re: Bone Marrow Registry
Could it be an issue that would potentially impact the recipient?
That seems odd. I'm MTHFR heterozygous and Factor V Leiden Mutation homozygous with a history of DVTs and they still wanted me.
Lurker butting in to add that my cousin was registered 3 years when she matched with a little girl. My husband and I registered at the same time and he matched with a woman a little over a year later. No matches for me still. My mom has been registered for 12ish years with no match.
We just did the online sign up and had cheek swab kits sent to us. The procedure my husband went through when he was matched was easier than you'd think. He went for a few medical tests, they scheduled an operation date to draw marrow from his hip and he was home that same day and on light lifting orders for a week. A little sore but no worse for the wear and last we heard the recipient is doing well.
My cousins procedure was much the same and the little girl and her family have become like a second family to her.
A great cause! And they're in serious need of minorities to sign up.
