3rd Trimester

XP: Need advice!

Alright, yesterday I posted about not feeling my contractions, and at my appt today found out I went from a 5 on Sunday to a 6 and 80%. Basically I have an incompetent cervix, and don't feel my contractions.

My OB mentioned at my appointment this morning that if I haven't had DD2 by next appt (Tuesday) she would discuss stripping my membranes, or if I'm at 7 cm admitting me. She (and I agree to some extent) doesn't feel comfortable sending me home dilated at or past a 7 since I don't feel my contractions. I'm afraid I wouldn't have time to make it to the hospital since I'm already so far along.

If you were in my shoes would you allow her to strip your membranes at 37 weeks? I guess I just don't see the hurry to get things started when I'll just be 37 and 4 by that appointment.

And would you feel okay with being admitted at a 7? SO is absolutely terrified of having this baby at home, so making it to the hospital is a big goal of his. Lol

Re: XP: Need advice!

  • Hm. Well, if I was in your shoes, I'd probably just go off what she thinks is best. Namely because I would be stressing the entire time about the "what ifs" of not getting to the hospital on time because I'm not keen on having my baby without help. Plus, baby is term and close to full term so I don't think I'd worry about him or her not being baked enough for life outside my womb.

  • That's tough. I am a FTM, too so I am not too knowledgable about membrane stripping. It seems to me if you are not feeling contractions, I don't understand how stripping the membranes would help that situation other than to bring labor faster. I would much rather prefer being admitted where they can monitor my contractions for me. Good luck with whatever you decide!

I totally agree - the goal of stripping your membranes is to hasten dilation and labor.  If you are 7cm dilated, get yourself admitted!  Good luck :)

Also, OP, what you described is NOT incompetent cervix, it's early labor.

I didn't really give much background on my situation, but I started thinning at 27 weeks, funneling at 30 weeks, was admitted at 33 weeks due to dilating to a 3, and was on bed rest from 27 weeks until 36. I most definitely have an incompetent cervix, just like I had with my daughter.

  • FTM here, but I would say yes to being admitted if I was at a 7.

I don't think I'd allow for stripping of membranes though.

Of course, this is totally up to you and whatever you feel is best for you and your little one.

    Good luck!

  • I really trust the doctors here, so I'd probably take their advice. Not sure how things are run where you are, but here they don't even do internal checks until you are 40 weeks.

Is there any chance you're slightly further along?

I'd be scared shiiitttless of delivering at home suddenly lol.

I think this is my main issue. I don't see the point in stripping membranes so early. I can handle being admitted while at a 7 because I just really don't want to chance sudden labor at home, Walmart, etc. Lol

I've been going to cervical check ultrasounds since about 20 weeks due to my incompetent cervix with my daughter, so I think that's why I've been having weekly appointments since 32 weeks, and cervical checks since last Tuesday.

Is there any chance you're slightly further along?

I don't think so. If I am it's not by much...my EDD was determined by ultrasound since I didn't have a period between our last miscarriage and this pregnancy.

Yes! SO is also. Lol He would most likely pass out and I'd have to fend for myself.
