Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Refusing the breast

Since yesterday DD (16 weeks old) is refusing to eat. When I lay her down to nurse she starts screaming. I think she's teething and her mouth might be hurting. She's drooling, has her two fists in her mouth, very cranky..We've been thinking that she's teething since 2 months old on and off though so I don't know.

I'm afraid she'll lose weight and get dehydrated if this continues? what should I do? I left a message with the nurse, waiting for a call back..

Side note: she does not take a bottle by any means so nursing was the only way to feed her..

Re: Refusing the breast

  • Has she been sick at all? Any way she could have an ear infection? Honestly, this happened to us a few times this weekend, and I'm not sure why either. I think DS might be teething, too, even though it's so early. But he has a bit of a cold so I worry he has an ear infection since DS1 had them ALL the time and basically just flipped every time he was horizontal. Since he's been nursing fine the last couple days I haven't called the pedi, but we'll see.

  • Have you had a pp period yet?  The days leading up to my first one (which was around 3 mos despite EBF) my LO was really cranky and didn't eat well at all.  Once it started, everything went back to normal.
