Natural Gender Selection?

Anyone purposefully try to sway the odds in their favor gender wise (tried for a girl/tried for a boy) and have success? What did you do?

I think the odds of these working are about 50/50.

  • I have not personally tried but there is someone on our BMB that tried the shettles method I think is what she called it. It was successful for them. Not sure if the success rates are any different than 50/50.

  • We weren't trying but I was temping to see if I even ovulated since I was fresh off the pill and according to shettles we should be having a girl. But we 're having a boy. Every old wives tale and shettles said girl and we were convinced until we found out through ultrasound.

  • Did the shettles method with the first two and it "worked" they are both girls. This pregnancy was a surprise and we are having a boy

  • Yes - we really wanted a girl so I drank orange juice non stop for a year and balanced on my head everyday for 30 minutes

LOL - there is not much you can do unless you go to a genetics fertility company

  • I think you will get more info on this from the ingender website.

I cut out caffeine and alcohol. I did NOT do the lime juice douche. I couldn't really do shettles because I had an IUI.  I'm Team Green so no idea if any of it worked.

  • We did Shettles this time. I was not banking or counting on it to work at all, I just figured it couldn't hurt.
  • Nope.  After miscarriages and a year of TTC, we just wanted a healthy baby.

A reputable reproductive endocrinologist won't perform IVF with PGD solely for the purpose of gender selection. Too ethically murky.

I'm not sure this is true.  If someone wants to pay for gender selection, there are many clinics/REs that will do it.

  • Well I suppose I wasn't really trying the Shettles method, but I'm having a boy and according to the Shettles method, that makes sense.

Basically, boy sperm is said to swim faster, girl sperm is said to live longer. I monitored ovulation, and had sex right around ov, and it's a boy. I believe under the Shettles method you should have sex a few days before ov to better your chances for a girl? I'm too lazy to look back and check to make sure I'm not making a fool of myself ;) I just remember reading this stuff a long time ago.

  • I admit I did some reading about it when we were about to TTC#2 but really didn't find any compelling evidence that it worked.

Hence the word reputable. I'm sure you can find an RE that would do gender selection but a reputable and ethical RE would not. I know mine definitely would not. But there are shady docs everywhere.

  • We didn't try anything on purpose, no.  But I have read about the Shettles method, and I know when I ovulated with each of my pregnancies.  I know it's probably still a crap shoot, but the Shettles method proved correct with each of my pregnancies.

  • We weren't trying for either particular gender but according to the shettles method we should be having a boy but we have a girl. I was charting so I know pretty close to when I ovulated and we only had sex the day of and after. Unless dh has super sperm and had some left over from the sex we had a week prior, but that seems less probable.
