Dh and I just got married on the 14th and we are currently looking into what to do about health insurance. Could DS be covered on DH's insurance? He says someone at work told him that he would need to be DS's legal guardian but I thought it was that if DS could be claimed as a dependent on taxes he could cover him....

Any step-parents have insurance covering the whole family, including the step-kids?

My step kids are on my insurance. Check with your insurance company since each one is different. I believe that most will let you put step children on though.

I don`t have personal experience with this since we are all on my husband`s insurance but my husband`s SM has his brother on her insurance until he hits age 26.

I carry my SKs on my insurance. DD's SM carries DD on her insurance. Like wendi said, marriage is typically a qualifying event. Also DH used to carry DD when we first got married. If the insurance is through the employer he needs to check with his HR department about rules regarding dependents.

DH carried my nephew for the 1.5 years he lived with us when he was 18/19 and finishing high school. Obviously not a "legal guardian" but was our dependent for tax purposes.

Thanks everyone! That's what I was thinking, too. DH has better insurance than I do so I was hoping he could cover us. We are going to put in a call to the insuracne company directly, though, his HR department at work is good for nothing.

Call and ask your insurance company for sure, but mine allows me to put on my spouse's dependents, therefore I am putting my SD on during open enrollment.

SS is on my insurance, they just required a copy of his BC showing DH as his father.

My SS is covered under my work plan.
