Cloth Diapering

Help with laundry routine

We have a HE washer. I've been taking notes on other people's routines, and it seems like a lot do quick cold wash w/o soap, regular hot wash with soap, cold rinse. My washer does not allow me to make the rinse temp different from the wash temp in the same cycle, which means I would have to make 3 trips to the washer per load.
Would it work if I did the quick cold wash, and then a hot wash with hot rinse?

ETA: this baby will be my first CD'd baby so I'm thinking ahead. No diapers to try it out on yet. :mobile smiley:

I have a HE FL. I don't worry about the temps. I do a rinse and spin cycle with extra rinse, then a normal cycle with extra rinse and extra spin. I don't even know what my water temps are.

  • On my HE FL I have a Heavy Duty option.  It does a pre-wash, then wash, then extra rinse if I want.  I don't put detergent in the pre-wash container, only in the main wash one.  I hit the button once and it goes for about 2 hrs but I don't have to come back to it.  If yours has that option, that may work for you.

  • I can add a prewash and an extra rinse to a single load, the problem is they all have to be the same temp. I'm wondering if it's really important to do cold/hot/cold.. I don't know the science of it lol

  • I think you'll be fine, but the only way to find out is to do it, then problem solve if needed. I also have a HE FL and do a cold rinse, then a hot/cold heavy duty wash (adds extra rinse). About once a week I also add on several extra rinses after that just to be sure I am getting everything out of those dipes.

Cold is the norm bc most washers will automatically do cold rinses.  I've never heard of it automatically giving a hot rinse if you wash in hot.  It's not shown, you just don't get a choice.

Cold water helps to cut the suds, warm water is supposed to be better at getting things out that are normally warmer temps themselves.  I get no choice, my rinses are cold.  Those who have a choice sometimes like to use warm for the first one bc they feel it works better.  Plenty of people think it doesn't matter.

Just use what your machine will do.

Ah ok!  I will have to check that out.  I've never actually used the extra rinse cycle so I just assumed it was the same temp as the wash.  This is the first washer I've ever owned (our apartment didn't have a W/D so I've only used commercial ones), and I've only had it a few months.  Total newbie here.  ;)
