My daughter doesn't seem to need to burp duing some feedings and some she burps just fine. I've read on many websites that some babies just don't need to burp as often. We use similac bottles which help reduce the air that is swallowed. Anyone have thoughts on this? I'm a FTM so all of this is new to me, she is 3 weeks old.
Due to some gassy issues we switched to dr browns bottles was using avent before and my DD definitely doesn't burp as much with these bottles. I guess it's the bottles doing their job and keeping air intake to a minimum. If your baby doesn't appear fussy or show signs of being uncomfortable then she is probably fine. Some babies just don't burp as much.
We use Avent bottles for DD & she doesn't burp after many feedings. It usually doesn't seem to bother her, but we do try to burp her for a few minutes every time. Once in awhile she will get really fussy after a feeding & it takes quite awhile to get her to burp. Our pedi said that it's nothing to be concerned about. I guess we just have ladylike daughters! :-)
If she doesn't burp then don't force it. Give her an opportunity, but after a minute I'd just keep going. You might also change the way you are burping her. If over the shoulder doesn't work, then up right patting the back* might work. The only way DD would burp was if I tilted her at a forty five degree angle and rubbed her back (not pat).
Sometimes they don't have to burp, but its a good idea to give them the opportunity to do so throughout the feeding.

Another technique we just discovered works is bouncing her on our knee.

We've had success bouncing and then doing Prim's pat and rub. That said, she definitely burps more after taking a bottle than BFing.
I have the best results gently stroking the back of DD's head. I put my thumb behind one ear and my middle finger behind the other ear and pull them together in a gentle petting/massaging motion. A Nicu nurse recommended it because it relaxes them. DD has a hard time burping and we've definitely had more success with that method.
