DH and I took the boys to a pool party at DS1's friend's house. The little boy's mom and I are friends because the boys have been in the same daycare class together since they were babies and I work at the school. One of the kids in attendance was a student of mine from this past year who was there with his parents and little sister.
There was beer at the party and since everyone else was drinking, including the parents of my former student, I went ahead and had one even though he was there and would see me *gasp* drinking. On top of that most of the kids who were there will be in my class the year after next when DS1's age group moves up to Pre-K. So, I was basically a teacher drinking alcohol in front my former and future students and their parents.
I have to say, it felt kind of weird but also pretty liberating because I knew no one cared.
Re: So, we can just confess whenever now? Cool beans.
As long as you weren't drunk, I don't think I would judge you for that.
I was raised in an environment where I saw my parents drink alcohol and was taught that its for adults only and is to be consumed in a responsible manner.
Yeah. I wouldn't have even thought about it at all if it hadn't been for the teacher thing. At my last school the principal was a bit of a stickler for "setting a good example" and would have frowned upon it.
I get that. But in the same token, its a pool party totally outside of school on your own time. I'm all for setting a good example, but when you're not at work and on your own free time, I certainly wouldn't frown upon you letting your hair down and having a drink or two!
I see nothing wrong with that!
At our old school, (DH is a hs principal) we had a HS teacher get caught TWICE half naked in the park by one of the student's parents...who was a police officer. And by half naked, I mean she still had a bra on. That is the only kind of situation my husband would be a stickler about with setting a good example. I know that particular situation made dh pretty uncomfortable, but if you are having drink with friends, at a friend's home, it generally doesn't come back to work, kwim?
Agreed! Plus, I wouldn't invite my kid's former/future teacher to a party where I was serving alcohol if I wasn't comfortable with her having a drink!
Like, she was running in a sports bra?? Or she was blasted and giving away free peep shows? I'm so confused
Well...she had company.. and a few drinks beforehand. I should have been more specific.
Ok then! Yes, a tad inappropriate
Unable to even.

ITA with this.
Me too. My old school warned us of the dangers of posting pictures of ourselves online with red solo cups since the cup held certain connotations.
I am not even joking. I'm surprised none of my colleagues' eyes got stuck in the back of their heads from rolling them too hard, lol.
Good for you! My sister teaches in a small town and when we go out to dinner, she orders her adult beverages in a Styrofoam cup.
Teachers are people too, dammit.
