I haven't used my Ergo since last summer but I'm thinking of pulling it out again. I've been doing a lot of hiking with my mom-BFF and our 2 year olds. We try to pick kid friendly trails but occasionally, a kid will crap out for whatever reason and then we end up carrying them back to the car. Yesterday we took the wrong trail and instead of going on "a .6 mile pleasant hike to the base of the falls" we went on "a steep 3.4 mile hike across a man-made log bridge of sorts to the top of the falls". Whoops. Anyway, I thought about buying one of those backpack carriers but then I remembered my Ergo. Has anyone ever used it for hiking? We're not talking serious hikes, mostly easy-medium, less than 3 mile hikes around the waterfalls in the area. I remember using it last summer with a back carry and didn't find it to be very comfortable (maybe I'm doing it wrong?), but I don't think my kid would tolerate a front carry anymore.
Re: Hiking with Ergo?
My DD just turned 3 and I don't use my Ergo much anymore but definitely still use it for travel. I walked all over Paris last fall with her on my back (she didn't want to walk much) and this spring we went to Rome and walked everywhere. She actually did a fair amount of walking her self but one day we walked about 10 miles. She napped on my back still at almost 3 and I thought it was pretty comfortable. She is just over 27 lbs now so not very heavy and I'm sure that helps. Last fall I and her in a front carry a couple of time and even though she still loved it it was hard on my back to have all that weight pulling on my front.
The only time I really put her in it at home is when I go grocery shopping because it is much faster and I need the room in the cart. Any other shopping she sits in the cart or walks. Plus I figure if I keep her in it a couple of times a month she will still be used to it when we go back to Europe this fall to visit my family. She will be able to walk a fair amount but she gets lazy pretty easily.
