Newborn photography...

I guess I am looking for some reassurance ...
tonite I reminded DH that I wanted good newborn and sibling photos done. Something more then I can do or walmart types. When I told him the deal I was offered from the photographer he freaked a bit..feels her camera didn't even cost that much blah blah. Do you think 400 for up to 3hr session and 10 digital images with print release is a bad deal? She does awesome work.
Google angi Randall photography to see if she's worth it :D

Re: Newborn photography...

  • Ours is normally 350 for 20 images up to 3 hours with disc and print release. She had a special on her Facebook for 75 off so we are paying 275 for all that. Google Jenn Harvey Photography if interested.
  • I feel like that is a big family expense. Go on Facebook and ask your friends for recommendations. My photographer does a two hour session which is usually long enough for an infant for one seventy five. Or you can get a package for 3 months 6 months 9 months and and one year for five hundred. You get all the photos and she will do anything for you. I would ask around.

  • I've shopped around where I live and that amount sounds about right. The only thing I'd say is that 10 images might be hard to choose from in the end. If it were me, I'd be looking for more like 20 with a print release. But that's just me, you just have to decide if 10 is enough for you! My photographer is having a special and charging us 266 for the session, print release on at least 20, and a small print package. I love her work so I'm very happy with this.

  • I think that's reasonable. I'm paying 300 for a 1 hour session, which she did say would probably end up being more than an hour, and 10 digital images with print release.

  • Check on groupon. We found an amazing photographer who was new to the area and just starting out here business here though she has plenty of experience elsewhere. Her groupon rate was 89 for a similar package to the one you described. She's did our maternity shots and they came out amazing! As soon as I get my laptop fixed and am not mobile, ill post. Check Groupon and Living Social. I always find awesome deals on there : good luck!
  • I am a photographer I think her price is okay for her work. I have seen much more expensive photographers out there, but their work normally matches the price. I personally would not do a groupon, it turns a photographer into like a sears studio during the groupon deal since they are not used to handling that many clients at once. What I am saying is that even if they have nice pictures on their website, there's a good chance you won't get the best of your photographer as they are going to get burnt out fast. Plus I know some photographers even hire second shooters during their groupon deal, so you might end up with a crappy photographer. Plus from what I have seen, no good photographer will even run a groupon deal, as they know it can hurt the quality of their work.

  • The price is accurate but I worry about a 3hr kids session. That's a long time to keep kids and a newborn in a happy picture taking mood!
  • 10 digital prints is really kind of a ripoff. For $400 I would expect some physical prints or a copyright release for the digital images to all of the images. That was my biggest criteria when I was shopping for photographers- I wanted the rights to reprint the images because that is where they really gouge you, on having images printed. If you have the rights, you can print as many as you want. I doubt that a 3 hr session would only yield 10 pictures. I also doubt the ability of small children to sit through a 3 hr session, so you may only get an hour's worth.

  • Hi! Normally just a lurker, but I'm a photographer and I couldn't help but chime in for this one- her work looks great and I agree with PP that you usually get what you pay for when it comes to photography. I think others have said most of what I would tell you, but I wanted to reply to your husband's comment about her camera not even costing that much- That's actually not true. Good equipment costs far more than that, and she will come with more than just her camera. Lenses are very costly in addition to the actual camera, which she should have multiple of, and I'm sure that she'll be bringing props for a newborn session as well. And just remember that you're paying for not only her time in the session, but the time that you don't see of editing the pictures afterwords, along with her experience and quality. There are also many other expenses of owning a business that are tied into the session fees that most people don't think about. With that said, I personally would give more than 10 images- but every photographer can be so different in that aspect. That's up to you. If you love her and don't want to shop around anymore, maybe you can find out if it's possible to get more than 10. But I wanted to add my two cents about the price! :) Alright, back to lurking I go...
  • We are paying 200 for 2 to 3 hour shoot and about 25 digital images with print release. Yours dows seems a little high to me and for only a few images but I definitely agree it is a special time that quickly changes so its important to capture it!
  • I really need to get out of NYC.  That price sounds amazing.  It's at least triple that for a decent photographer here.

  • How do I upload pics on here from my iPhone? I would like to share some of my newborn photography work on here I am new to this site
  • Here is an example of some of my photography I do, I am freelance which means I don't charge a lot and I am in the Vegas area, don't know if this helps! image
  • That's a pretty good price, actually.  My newborn sessions are $175 and you just get the session for that.  If you want a digital file (which I try not to sell as I hate the digital trent) I charge $75 each.   Usually I push clients to get actual products, like canvases and albums, so they have something to show for their money and don't lose their investment when their harddrive crashes.  My print packages start at about $700.  My average customer spends well over $1000 on a portrait session.  $1500 is my average.

Btw, you can tell your H that she spent WAY more than $400 on her gear.  She shoots with a Canon 50D (not the greatest camera... it's a mid-entry DSLR but it's "good enough") which sells for probably $1,400 new these days and a 24-70 f/2.8 L lens which is almost $2,000 brand new.  Plus she edits with Photoshop CS5 which is around $500.  Not to mention that her business seems legit enough that she probably at least has insurance.

Photography is not cheap.  Your H needs to realize that.  It may not be a priority for him, which is fine, but to insult the photographer based on a complete lack of knowledge is kind of rude.  She is charging accurately for the area and what she can offer as far as her talent goes and what she needs to make back to justify the expenses of her business.
