Question about RE and who will see me thru the pregnancy

Hi all!

I have a question that I feel like I should already know the answer to.  If/when I get pregnant, will my RE see me thru the pregnancy or will I go back to my OB?

 Thanks for your input!

Re: Question about RE and who will see me thru the pregnancy

  • Most REs will release you to an OB anywhere from 7-12wks (this info is based on what I've seen from the ladies on PAIF and SAIF).  Mine released me after the 2nd beta, but that was only because we knew the u/s wouldn't be covered by insurance unless done by an OB.

  • Mine saw me until 7 weeks, but my OB picked me up at 6 weeks so I had double for a week which was fine by me (got an extra ultrasound out of it!).

I "graduated" from the RE at about 8 weeks.  I'm sure it's different for everyone but will probably be right around there.

  • Mine gave me the boot at 8w. I would avoid an OB that did RE services and an RE that wanted to deliver your baby. An RE only should care about getting you pregnant. An OB should be concernede with maternal/women's health and fetal health. While there is a small bit of overlap, they are vastly different specialties.
    TTC Since 3/2010
Me-36, Unexplained Infertility, DH-35, all clear
    Clomid 50mg 12/2011 = BFN
    Clomid 100mg 1/2012 = BFN, with Cyst
    IVF #1 Lupron/Menopur/Gonal-f/HCG Trigger
    ER 4/19/12 = 11 retrieved, 6 fertilized,
    ET 4/22/12 = 2 transfered (day 3), remaining 3 weren't good enough to freeze
    Beta 5/3 = BFP, 87 Beta #2 5/7 560.9 Beta #3 5/9 1376.5 First u/s One Baby, 125bpm!
Second u/s, 176bmp! Kicked over to the OB by the RE at 8w. Team Green!!
Baby girl J arrived two weeks early! Born into water, med-free. Hooray for Team Pink!

TTC #2 - back to the RE, treatment started 12/2014.

I was released from RE at 7 weeks but continued blood work to monitor progesterone levels until 13 weeks. At that point it was only phone calls, I didn't have to go in to see my RE after that 7 week appointment.

  • Thanks everyone!  Looks like this ended up being my lucky month, cycle #13 after two chemicals.
  • My RE also managed my pregnancy through delivery.  I know this is not common but he did an absolutely wonderful job. I had an extremely high risk pregnancy due to vasa previa and he was amazing working with my maternal fetal medicine specialist. I will continue to see him for annual GYN check ups as well.
