We had our 20 week anatomy scan this morning. Both BOYS look healthy! They are both measuring a week ahead and weigh 14 oz each. The doc was called in to check Baby B's kidneys. It seems his one kidney is slightly dilated [5mm], but he couldn't find the other one. He is saying that it likely didn't develop. I've read a lot about it and it seems like he will be just fine, but I'm still hoping that it is actually there! Anyone had this happen?
Not exactly the same, but one of my girls has a multicystic dysplastic kidney. . .which basically means that one kidney is full of cysts and non-functioning. It has been shrinking, and we are actually hoping that it will disappear! The doctors have all assured us that she can live a perfectly normal life with one kidney, while there is a chance for infection or cancer while the cystic kidney is still there.
It freaked us out when we first found out (I was about 22 weeks pregnant), but we realized that if she is going to have a problem with an organ, we are lucky it is her kidney. A missing kidney isn't a huge deal, and it would be much worse with almost any other organ.
We just found out last year my husband only has 1 kidney, and he is a very healthy 38 years old. When he went in for his vasectomy they could only find one vas deferens tube so Dr sent him for abdominal ultrasound as from a urology standpoint only one vas deferens could mean only one kidney as they develop from the same cells inutero. Sure enough he only has one, thankfully very healthy kidney. 39 years ago my MIL never had a single ultrasound so no way we would have ever known had he not gone in to get snipped. Dr. Said its really no big deal as you can definitely live with only one but want to be careful with high contact sports, activities to not get a kidney injury.

My healthy, 33 year old husband also only has one kidney
Our niece who is now 5 was born with only one kidney as well and is doing fantastic! There are precautions if you only have one, but life is pretty normal otherwise.
One of the twins I am carrying also has only one kidney. We met with a specialist at a Children's Hospital and the plan is to have the good kidney checked during every ultrasound just to verify it is working properly and there are no issues with fluid buildup. The one kidney is slightly larger but they were not concerned as they said it is common to see this because it is taking over and doing the work for two. Once the babies are born we will take our son in when he is about a month old for an ultrasound and to see the doctor just to again make sure everything is working ok and there are no issue with fluid back up. You can live with one kidney and there are so many people out there with only one that don't even know about it. It pretty much the same as if the baby had two, you still want to make sure you are getting plenty of wet diapers and watch for any symptoms of an UTI. You will hear different opinions when it comes to playing sports, the biggest thing is just making sure he wears proper safety gear and we were told to avoid anything that could cause a fall such as horse back riding... but the doctor and we agreed that we want to keep his life as normal as possible and not over do it with restrictions after all there are other important organs that we only have one of so it is the same thing.....

Good luck!
