Bummis BeautifulBASIC - Day 1 Review

I'm dipping my toe into the pool of CD, so far my start has been a little chilly.

Yesterday I bought the Infant Boy BummisBASIC Package as it seemed like an affordable start with 1 cover and 3 prefolds for $25. I spent yesterday afternoon prepping the prefold inserts and started with DSs second diaper change today (first one was a blowout and since DS doesn't poop all that much, I wanted to avoid having to clean a poopy CD on day 1.

Well, I was disappointed in the fit.  The infant size is for 8-15lbs, DS is somewhere under 13lbs still.  Once the prefold is inserted the diaper is ENORMOUS (keep in mind my expectations could have been to high in this area as I don't really know any CDers).  DS didn't seem to like how his legs were forced to be wider than usual.

After nursing and napping, DS woke up screaming.  He had wet the diaper; good news, no leak.  So it was a nice easy diaper change putting in another prefold. Though DS didn't seem happy with the dry diaper again.

I seem ok with CD though and I thought I was going to hate it.  I'll put the laundry on tonight and this should be good.  My verdict after half a day, is that i'll continue to use my Bummis on days when convenient. And consider trying another brand eventually.  (While I was buying my Bummis, I saw an anquaintance mommy buying BumGenius 4.0 and 3.0 to test out as she dips her toes into CD.  We will see her on Tuesday, so we are going to swap stories and maybe i'll give those a shot.)

Other diapers I'm considering trying are flip and grovia (i like the idea of hybrid and disposable insert availability).  Though, I might like tofind something that fits trimmer. DS is a skinny uy and the big cd looks quite silly on him compared to his huggies size 1 diapers.  (open to suggestions for next steps.)

Re: Bummis BeautifulBASIC - Day 1 Review

  • UPDATE (ALREADY!)

DS took a poop in his CD.  I was happy to see no "poopslosion", and was excited to try and change him into his last pre fold. But the failure was all mine, I neglected to velcro the tab down when I opened it up and managed to get poop on the shell.  Since I only have one cover, our day is done and I'll be putting the laundry on now.

QUESTION:  I use Buncha Farmers StainStick (https://www.snugglebugz.ca/bunch-a-farmers-stain-remover.html) to get poop stains out of DSs clothes, can I use this on the diaper (prefold and/or cover)?

Pretty sure you can, but honestly just wash as usual and put it in the sun to dry. Less work, less worry, and the stains will be gone like magic.

  • Also, if your son is bothered by the wetness in the prefold, you can buy a yard of micro fleece and cut it up to use as stay dry liners to keep the wetness from him. I'm not sure if he was or not, but you said he was screaming when wet so wanted to throw that out there.

I second using the sun for stains.  It's so easy and less hassle :)

  • I remember being surprised at how bulky the prefold and cover seemed on my newborn. LO was about a week old and I had used preemie prefolds and AIOs up til then. The bummis infant prefold is substantial. I wasn't a big fan of snappied prefolds, but I still use that size to stuff my applecheeks pockets (at 6 months and 14.5 lbs) and they work well. So even if you decide to go with another kind you can still get use out of them. Bulkiness varies a lot between diaper types, but all are bigger than a dry disposable. My trimmest diaper is fuzzibunz elite OS. BG 4.0 is a good all round diaper and well liked around this board. Bulkier than FB, but not too bad.

  • END OF DAY UPDATE

Washing went fine, couldn't see any poop after the wash, so I dried the cover in the sun and the pre folds in the dryer.  And just to spite me DS had a poopslosion in his Huggies while we ate dinner, and I said he hardly poops, that was his 4th today! I was happy enough to put my freshly clean cd back on DS, but will put his target disposable back on him when he goes to bed.  All in all, good day, and we saved the world from 3 disposable diapers today!
