TTC after 35

Anyone abstain from alcohol completely when TTC?

I don't drink that much normally - sometimes one glass of wine in the evening and maybe a glass of wine when we go out to dinner.  That is about it.

I have continued doing this while TTC but have recently read a few articles recommending abstaining from alcohol altogether when TTC.  We did manage to get PG a few months ago and I stopped altogether once I got a BFP, but then miscarried a couple of weeks later.

Because I had a loss, I don't mind being ultra cautious this time around so if I don't drink at all that is fine with me.  Just curious about others' thoughts on the subject.

Re: Anyone abstain from alcohol completely when TTC?

  • I'm not a regular drinker by any stretch, but I will have a glass of wine or a shot of Baileys in my hot chocolate every once in a while. Certainly not enough to affect anything, I don't think the odd drink hurts at all.  I've had cycles where I didn't have a single drink and didn't get pregnant anyways, I don't see it making a difference.

  • yes, 2 1/2 years of no alcohol and minimal caffeine

  • Ticker warning. When I met with the RE two of the things he said were no alcohol and no caffeine. Especially with AMA this is recommended. Luckily I had already been following this plan. With a history of loss there really was no way to know if it would contribute to miscarriage so for me I just didn't want to take the risk.
Me:41, DH:41 Positive for MTHFR mutations- one copy C677T, one copy A1298C. One daughter born on Thanksgiving in 2013. Six losses.
  • No, I didn't.  But I definitely cut down a lot, especially during the 2WW.  I believe everything in moderation, I still go out with friends and have a beer/wine or two.  The ttc process is hard enough, I don't want to let that completely affect my soical life.

This made me LOL...I only have one, but I know just what you mean.

  • I have mostly abstained in the last 2 years. Occasionally one during AF or pre O. But since I have more ability to control alcohol then caffeine or sweets, I have just avoided in general. Also made it much easier overall people in general just saw me stop so if I ever did get BFP there would be no suspicion.

  • No way. I live in Germany! :) I am more mindful of it now that we are TTC, and I stick to one cup of coffee a day, but I have a toddler, I have to have caffeine in the morning after the early wake ups!

  •  I do not drink at all while TTC (i'm hardly a drinker anyways) and cut way down on coffee/caffiene. That's harder for me than drink lol
  • I drink socially, maybe a glass of wine or two. I've noticed since I'm TTC I don't drink as often. Avg about 1-2 glasses a week. Sometimes I just need it!!!

@guennie that's interesting that your re said no alcohol at all. I haven't seen an re yet and I really hope I don't ever have to, but every month I keep getting closer to realizing that I may need to.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I am more of a social drinker, not heavy, but will indulge in wine/beer with dinner on a regular basis. In the next week, I plan to cut back, and will abstain during my 2ww. No idea if it will make a difference, but at least it will be one thing I have control over.

  • I am this time. Ill have a cup or glass if wine after I start my period.

With DS I got a BFN and had a few beers that night. The next week I was still waiting fir my period. I tested again and got a BFP. I know it's technically fine but I never want to feel that level of guilt and shame if I can help it.

I have no beef with those who decide differently :)

  • Not totally. I had a few sips of wine here and there.  Not a lot at all, but occasionally I wanted the taste.

  • I had cut down significantly when I conceived DS in 2008, and I try to have just one cup of coffee and milk a day and 1-5 drinks (beer/wine) a week, but it's very hard for me to abstain completely. I could go w/o alcohol but not coffee. I have a 4 yr old that wakes up early and herbal tea just doesn't do it for me, lol.
