Working Moms

dilemma sort of...need some insight

Hi there!

I used to post on this board before I became a SAHM and now that I am back working (have been for about a year) I figured I would stop by.

I am am in a little bit of a dilemma, I was contacted by a recruiter from a big company yesterday about a contract position, the contract is long term (9 months plus)and the recruiter said that the manager she is working with does hire their contract workers if it is a good fit. It pays $4 more an hour than I am making now, and it would allows us to get my Husbands benefits which are leaps and bounds above what we have now.  It would also allow us to pay off the rest of our debt more quickly and save at the same time.

On paper it all looks fantastic, but here is the actual dilemma, I have been temping with a company for a year, they have told me they want me to work here, but they have yet to hire me, and it always seems to be some excuse or it gets brushed off.  I love it here, but I also need to think about my families financial future, I just am nervous to go from one temp position to another.  We are also currently TTC our 3rd baby, so it makes me nervous to leave and start somewhere new, but I feel like it would be stupid to pass up this opportunity.

  • Can you go to the present company and tell them, basically, that it's now or never?  You want to stay but you have to have a permanent job in hand or you're going to leave?

  • If I am offered the Job, I am thinking I will do that, I would prefer to stay here, I have good working relationships with my co workers, I enjoy the atmosphere, but I need more money, benefits etc.  I am nervous about the reaction that may get as well though.

I would sit down with your current employer and have a discussion with them.  Explain to them that you would like to stay there but need a more permanent position or you'll be forced to look elsewhere.  If they can't give you a definite answer, maybe it is time to move on and at least you have the other lead.

    This. Play their hand.

  • Interview for the new position; you have absolutely nothing to lose by interviewing.

If you do receive an offer, I'd take it.  Your current company has had many chances to convert you to permanent and they haven't done so.  There are many valid reasons why, I'm sure, but actions speak louder than words.  And the additional money and experience are great benefits.

  • Oh, and yeah- go interview first.  See if you get offered the job!  If you do, then talk to your present employer and tell them the deal.  See if they $hit or get off the pot.

  • We hire 9 month contracts often, but only sometimes are they really 9 months.  Projects change, funding shifts, priority changes...and sometimes we release consultants after only a couple months.  I would ask the recruiter to ask the firm about retention rates for consultants (% who complete 9 months) and % of FT hires (the same is true for our firm, but we hire maybe one person a year).  You also don't know what the fit will be with a new company.

  • Ditto PPs, apply/interview.

Then decide if you want to give your current place the opportunity to commit, or you may decide you're ready to move on regardless, or you may decide the new job isn't right for you.

    GL!

  • Ditto PPs. I had a similar situation. I was interning for a company I really wanted to work for and who kept saying I was probably going to get a full time offer. I received a strong offer from another company. I literally printed it out, gave it to my boss, and very kindly said, if I don't have a written offer from you before next Monday, unfortunately I will need to accept this other offer. The very next day I had a written and stronger offer in hand.
