Babysitter?

How much do you pay your babysitters? My coworker's daughter is going to hang out with DD for a few hours tomorrow while I write, no more than four or five hours, I think, and I'll be in the house for at least part of that time. I have NO idea how much to pay her. She's 14. I have no idea what's fair!

Hm, some of this depends on the area in which you live, but I would say $10/hr is absolutely plenty.. you could probably do $7 or $8 especially since you're home and will likely end up interacting with E some while the sitter is there.. now, if you live in a HCOL area, this might be on the low side.. but again given the young age of the sitter (and assuming her inexperience) and the fact that you'll be there.. I still think $10 is more than enough... just my opinion..

When I was in college, my school was in a HCOL area.. I was paid $15/hr to watch an 11 year old 3 hours a day after school.  I helped him with his homework, but mostly just watched him play with his neighborhood friends outside, or we played video games inside on the rainy days.

We pay $10/hr and we were out of the house, but to be honest, its probably going to be more difficult for her if you are there because  if you are kicking around, Elinor will know it, so I wouldn't really figure that into how much to pay her.   

I'm really thinking about leaving once I feel like she's comfortable and I'm confident she can handle it. We've just never met before, and I've only left DD with older, trusted folks. Her mom is a gem and I'm sure she'll be fine, I just, you know. 14! I was not reliable at 14.

At 14 I was watching my 2 younger cousins 10 years younger than me. I never watched over night but for several hours. I was always the family babysitter. I even went to Maui for 14 days to watch them at 17. I think 10/hr is fair. Depending on her maturity you might be super surprised.

My 14 yr old niece has babysat DS a few times - she's super mature and "motherly" for her age if you ask me. I don't think I'd trust most 14 year olds but since I know her and trust her, I am okay with it. I paid her $20 for a 2.5 hour date night that DH and I had recently - DS was asleep for like 75% of that time so she didn't actually have to "watch" him as much, so I felt like that was fair.
