Please discuss. I'm just trying to get a feel for how it's generally regarded. It seems to me that it's the result of poor sanitation, but is that too judgmental?
Btw, not talking about when it's the result of mom or baby being on antibiotics.
I had it. I wasn't sure if it was from taking antibiotics during pregnancy or from my oversupply. I would leak everywhere anytime my baby slept longer than 2 or 3 hours at night. I would soak through my bra, shirt, nursing pads and all over the bed. It took a good 3 months for my body to figure out how to regulate my milk. I definitely don't think I got it because of bad hygiene... That's kind of rude.
Agree with littlepetals...that's very rude, actually, and I think it's quite common. What do you mean "generally regarded"?
I have been a crazy germa-phobe FTM from the beginning--sanitizing everything, including myself (and changing nursing pads/bras/shirts constantly), but I had a serious oversupply and all kinds of issues as a result--baby spitting up, milk blisters, engorgement, and yes, thrush. When I called my doctor she basically said, yeah, it happens, and prescribed me a special nipple ointment. I don't recall her saying, "practice better hygiene, you filthy mom, you". So yeah, in other words, you're being judgmental.
Thrush can be caused from bottles and nipples not being cleaned or sanitized properly. I work at a daycare and a child in my DD class got it and she's not breastfed. Her bottles were not being cleaned thoroughly and you could tell. So no I don't think that what you said was being judgmental. Sure it can happen to anyone who is a clean freak, but it can also happen to those who are not taking the time to sanitize properly.
Re: Is thrush really all that common?

I'm not actually being judgmental. Sorry for the poor phrasing.
