Double Ear Infection...again..

I brought my little guy to acute care last week thinking he had an ear infection.  He had really been pulling and digging at his right ear.  I actually hate acute cares, but he seemed pretty uncomfortable so I brought him in.  That doctor said he had fluid in his ear but it was not red and not even a little bit pink.  So he spiked a fever Sunday and has been miserable since.  I called his doctor on Monday and they called in an antibotic that day and I started it that evening.  He went in for his 12 month check Tuesday...his fever was gone, but still fussy and tugging at his ear.  She had checked it out and his left ear is very red and right is also red, but not as bad as left.  So i'm continuing the antibiotic, but a friend of mine had mentioned that she doesn't even mess with antibiotics anymore and her doctor gives her some kind of ear drops.  I did some searching on the internet and only found mullin/garlic ear drops.  Just wondering if anyone has tried anything like that.  Or any other suggestions to help soothe him.  We do tylenol and motrin, but it seems to only take a bit of the edge off...he still is very fussy, and crying most of the day and absolutely does not want to be put down.  I feel bad for him.  I had terrible ear infections when I was a kid and had tubes 3 different times so I feel his pain!  Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.  Thanks! :)

There are some ear drops that are numbing and they help a little bit.  They are prescription drops (at least the ones I've used for DS) so you would have to ask your pedi.  I don't remember the name of the drops, unfortunately.

  • Ear drops from the dr are not garlic drops.  They are an antibiotic solution directly in the ear, I believe.  My son has had to use them a few times before, and what we have currently (after having tubes redone last week is this https://www.rxlist.com/floxin-otic-drug.htm but I am not positive it is the same solution we've had before.

If your kid is having such terrible infections regularly and they are not cured by a single dose of antibiotics, it is probably time to talk about tubes.  This is Sam's second set, but the first ones were life changing.  The constant infections and fevers went away for years, and only recurred after the tubes came out.  Hence redoing them.
