Question 1- bottles for pumping

For those of you back at work and pumping, how many bottles do you bring to work and how many are at home? I expect LO to feed 4-5 times when I am at work.  Thanks!

Re: Question 1- bottles for pumping

  • When I pumped with DS1, I knew how many sessions I'd have each day (was pumping every 3 hrs), so I'd bring along that many bottles to fill.  I also used different bottles for my pump that I used for feeding DS1, so it didn't matter how many bottles were at home.

I guess I'm not sure how mny ounces I'll get in a session. I usually get 4oz from one side in the middle of the night after a 5-6h stretch.

I pump 3 times and bring 4 bottles. I pump into 2 bottles and combine those. Them I reuse one bottle and the third bottle, and combine. For the third pump I reuse one bottle and use the last bottle and again combine so I end up with 3 full bottles and one empty.

E eats 3 times at DC. I pump into medela bottles but fill her avent bottles to send to DC. I leave one bag of frozen milk at DC as backup. But in the beginning i sent 4 bottles every day just in case. On Friday I freeze all of my leftover milk and on Mondays send my oldest frozen milk.

I work nights, so DD only eats about 3-4 times when I am gone (5pm ish, 8pm ish, and sometime between 4 and 6am).  I actually don't bring bottles to pump into.  I used to use the Medela Pump and Save bags, but since I had DD#1, they changed their design.  They used to have what seemed like a big piece of tape that went from one side of the bag, over the top of the pumping set up, and back to the other side of the bag, but now have an extra plastic piece that attaches to the pump that holds the bag in place.  I didn't like having an extra piece to clean, so I started just attaching my pumping bags to the set up with my own scotch tape.  Now I use Lansinoh bags and tape.  It works well for me - and I skip the step of transferring from a bottle to the bag for storage.  And there is one less piece of equipment to clean!

Hmmm. Yes,I use the bags right now too. I should've bought more yesterday. Might be best for travelling to and from, especially since I'm only likely to pump for two weeks before going on DHEA.
