Take lots of toy's and maybe books for entertainment and have someone sit in the back seat.
We did a 4.5hr drive with DD when she was 6 months, she only napped for about an hour, the rest of the time she played herself and I made sure to keep her toys were she could reach them or I played with her. She did great! we left shortly after she woke up in the morning and after she ate breakfast.
We haven't done a long trip since she was 5wks old (she slept most of the time) however we do a lot of 1-2hr drives to local cities. We always leave at nap time so she sleeps most of the way. Works great. We also make sure one of us sits in the back next to her while the other drives that way we can keep her happy, hand toys, etc.
We just got back from a weekend trip (5 hour drive) with our one year old. On Friday we left in the evening because my husband couldn't get off early, I sat in the back with LO the whole time gave him dinner in the car but when it came close to bed time and he realized he was not getting out of his carseat any time soon, he got very upset. I know a lot of people leave for trips at bedtime and drive through the night and it works great for them, but it did not go so well for us and we will not be doing that again! Today on our way back we left in the morning around breakfast time and he did okay until nap time and again he was pissed that he was still in the car and it took him about an hour and a half to fall asleep and then only slept 45 min. I always have lots of toys for him in the car and books. Also I got desperate and played him Mickey cartoons on my iphone. My son is very good natured, always happy, but he is also very very active and cannot stand being restrained so naturally he hates long car rides. We have done this same 5 hour drive with him a few times, first at 4 months, then around 8 months, and then now at 12.5 months. I'm not sure which age was worse lol
