Baby Names

Kai for a girl

It would be her middle name

My late father was an avid fisher. We have been trying to find a middle name that realates to him and this love but without being direct. (No names like Brooke,Lake and such.) We originaly fell in love with the name Mina which means fish in sanskrit but it doesn't flow well. Kai means ocean in Hawaii which also fits our criteria.

Our top name choice is Hanna(pronounced Hannah). Hanna Mina just doesn't work. Sounds like a lame version of Willamina

Is Hanna Kai any better? It kind of sounds like a funky version on Malachi to me. Any other MN suggestions that fit our wants?

Re: Kai for a girl

  • Not a huge fan.   I actually thought of Marina as a water reference name, although it's a little direct.

Reading fail: i Just saw this would be the middle name.  I think it's cute as a middle name.

  • I think it's fine, given the story behind it. It's not like you're going to call her by her FN and MN all the time.

A quick search found Tay, which is the name of a river in Scotland famous for salmon fishing, or Bayless, which apparently has a fishing history. How about Bay? It's a legit name but not in your face.

  • Thanks for the quick response ladies.

I think Bay does seem nice. I will keep that one in mind. Thank you.

Bay seems extremely overt - I'd rank it up there with Lake, a name you were trying to avoid.

I guess I don't totally follow what you're after here.  Good luck, Alyssa!

I agree about it being overt. I just feel like we are running out of options and far as what we actually want. Bay is overt but is less common to me. I know multiple girls named Brooke and I know a baby boy named Lake.

I would love to find something that fits our wants exactly. Haha.

  • I like Hannah Kai. Kai is a legit feminine Hawaiian name meaning sea. I like the sentiment behind it!

And I really like the option of Hanna Lynn. Lynn meaning waterfall.

However they have a ton of names you can try out.

    Good luck.

  • I like Hanna Kai.

My sister who is 34 years old is Laura Kai. Growing up, I never knew Kai was traditionally a boy name! I like it in the first name spot only for a boy now, but I think it's perfectly fine in the middle name spot for a girl. My sister loves it and has gotten compliments on it her whole life.
