Carrier

What carriers to you recommend to nurse discretely in with newborns to maybe 8 months in? Then after a year what are the best for back pain issues in mamma?

Re: Carrier

  • Newborns will probably require some support to nurse for the first couple of months but several options work well to provide privacy: ring sling, moby wrap, k'tan, woven wrap. I really like a mei tai for a newborn, but I admit I couldn't really use it to nurse.

For a heavier baby, I like a two-shoulder carrier for wearing longer. I had an Ergo Sport and used it a lot, as well as the mei tai (Infantino Sash is a low cost entry model).

For a toddler, I use my ring sling for the up-and-down times and an Ergo for the "put him on my back and don't want to let him run around" times (like the farmer's market).

I am looking at the kinderpack, and it can be used for nursing, or so i'm told. Also, I just found out today that my FSA will reimburse for a baby carrier, you just need to have a letter stating that you need it from the doc. So if you know you already have back issues, talk to the doc. You may be able to get a better carrier, whatever will be best for you, instead of letting cost be your deciding factor.

Early on, a ringsling or Kinderpack infant.

Older... Ergo performance with cargo bag for diapers or if you can afford it, Tula, Bloo Kangaroo Kanga Sport, or Kinderpack. The last three are nicer than an ergo or boba but will put a dent in your wallet.
