What would you pay a nanny?

We currently pay $143/week for 1 infant in daycare 2 days per week.  There is a 10% discount at our center for 2 kids, so $272/week once baby#2 gets here.

With that as a starting reference point to prices in our area, what would you pay a nanny??

2 days per week (12 hr days)

15 month old and 2 month old

Only very light cleaning (just cleaning up after the babies, no other housework)

TIA!

Re: What would you pay a nanny?

  • Here in NJ you pay 500 a week.

  • I don't think the rates in a center are relevant.  Or, they are relevant for determining whether it's cost effective to have a nanny, but not for determining what is reasonable to pay.

Around here, nanny for two kids = $14/hour, so $336/week.  Maybe you could find someone for like $12, as pp said, but I would start to be leary of the credentials of someone willing to charge less than that.

You would probably need to ask around in your area to determine going rates there.

  • When I was a nanny (upstate ny) I made $12/hr starting pay for one kid

  • Thanks ladies!  I have thought about the whole "sick days" thing and it makes me a bit nervous.  I don't have the ability to call out last minute from my job.  We do love our daycare but were looking to explore all our options.

As for asking around, we really don't know many people here.  I have one friend locally who hired a nanny and both nannies she hired quit within a week.  She was only paying $10/hr and I have a feeling that's part of the reason...like they had accepted the position just until they could find something better paying.  KWIM?

  • I think it is highly dependent on where you live.  I am in a very LCOL area.  I only have a couple colleagues that use nannies, and they generally pay $8 to $10 per hour.  Care.com suggests that the average pay for one child is $7.50 per hour, which is only 10 cents above my state's minimum wage.

  • We pay our sitter $15/hr for a 5 yo and 2.5 yo. She takes DS1 to and from school (he goes half a day), and cleans the kitchen after lunch. We live in a major city.
